when i used to set hyd lifter cams at zero lash,no preload,to get more RPM,no lifter pump up and it was quiet so i am guessing that a couple of thousands may sound just like solids.
Clem, I have no idea how much "lash" was in one of my 66's hydraulic lifters (normal wear, about a year old), but it sounded for all the world like a knocking rod. I figure if you had too much lash in all sixteen, you would have yourself a nice little rythm orchestra...and a car you couldn't give away.
I adjusted the valves as per the service manual with the engine running...to my great relief, that knock went smooth away as I cranked in the prescribed pre-load.
