The 427/435 engine options L89 and L71 had them available in 1969 also. TBarr #24014

      Duke and Tom----

Yes, L-71s and L-71/L-89s were available with the THM, also. Actually, the THM-400 is a very stout transmission---one of the best ever built by any manufacturer. In fact, in it's reincarnated, electronic form it is still manufactured today and available in trucks, motorhomes and over-the-counter. It's new nomenclature is 4L80-E. GM came up with a lot of automatics intended to replace it, but none of them ever did. In fact, I believe that the THM-400 went out of production for several years and, "due to popular demand" and OTHER reasons, GM brought it back and, thereafter, updated it to electronic configuration.

Now, I'm definitely NOT an "automatic guy", but I'd still have to acknowledge that the THM-400 is a legend, and rightfully so.

Jon, I am also in the metro PHX area. You can try to get a title only title. All you have to do is give them a reason that the car is yours, but not operational. I am sure you know it needs to be visually inspected first. Then proceed to the counter and tell them that you want a title only because. You may use one of several reasons. Let them know that it doesn't pass emissions but you want to title it, or like I did once on an old VW bug. Tell them that the battery is dead and due to the strange nature of where the battery is located it will take a while to repair it. Just be careful not to let them think the car is disassembled. They may issue a salvage title in that case. As far as getting it registered there are hard case exemptions. If you spend over a certain amount to get it certified. etc. What I have done in the past is get to know a small repair shop that is emissions certified. Have them fill out the paperwork for you. They will be able to help especially if you let them look at the L88.... Eric #3,182

Re: Some tricks in passing emmissions....

George, That may not work in AZ. They inspect all the emissions hoses, valves etc. They might catch that unless you are good at making it look right. Eric #3,182

Additional thoghts to my last message "Emissions". If after you go through and set up the engine properly, check for vaccuum leaks and repair as necessary, you still have high HC at idle, most times HC can be reduced by retarding the timing. It would be easy to do if you have a garage with a "sniffer" and they are willing to adjust/test your car until it is in compliance. The car may not have any power in this form, but it will pass emissions. After you pass return it to original specs until next time.

I don't know about Arizona, but in California I believe that the timing setting is one of the items that the inspection station checks in the "pre-inspection", prior to the actual emissions test. If it is very far from factory specs, I believe that the car fails. I could be wrong on this point, but I believe that is the way it works.

                In Ohio, they don't bother.....

lifting the hood, so it was a cake walk for me. When I pulled out of the inspection station, I connected the pvc hoses, and rode off into the sunset.

Joe, Here in Ct. they don't check anything except for a cat. on cars so equipped. So long as the vehicle passes the test [1 min. on the rollers] that is all that is required. With the high readings this car gave, there is something definitly wrong that should be very obvious.

                    John:

If you are in the Phoenix area - as Eric states - give a call to Jim Kane at Kane's Autmomotive in Peoria - (623)878-2077 - as I recall Jim used to race a Willys coupe with a BB; proper tune plus kick the idle speed up a couple of hundred rpm and A DIFFERENT TESTING LANE FOR THE RETEST should find you plated and happy.

Hey Geezer - I haven't had any of my cars into the Illinois test yet - all are even number years and due soon, BUT I was told that only 1981 and newer get the rollers. Us older folks without computers still get the sniff only. My first ride is due next month so I'll let you know.

Guess it is all 80 and newer that are FWD.
