the engine sounds different
Most high performance engines have higher compression ratios and a camshaft with longer duration which opens the exhaust valve sooner - while the cylinder pressure is still higher. Unlike the LOUD exhausts commonly seen on pickup trucks that rumble like a garbage truck, the high perf motors have slightly more of a popping quality. Best example is to go to an NCRS meet and listen to an L88 and a 390 HP car. They definitely sound different with the exact same exhaust system.- Top

Re: the engine sounds different
Bill------
As I've mentioned before, to my ear the 1971 LS-6 was the best sounding Corvette engine EVER (WITH original mufflers, of course). And, the 1971 LS-6 was a 9.0:1 compression engine. So much for this notion that it takes high compression to "make an engine sound good".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: the engine sounds different
Just put LS-6 pistons in an LS-5 and add GM offroad mufflers (discontinued from production), the you have a real good sounding car. If you every see a "frog green" 72 with the tag 72LS-5 you will know what I am talking about.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: the engine sounds different
Joe,
--------Many years ago when BG was still at the old Bloominton fairgrounds I drove my LS6 down to be judged. On the way down in a caravan of sorts I decided that the lead car was going a tad slow (I was back about four cars). I will never forget the sound of an LS6 at 6200RPM in fourth gear (3:55 gears). That car never got near a trailer while I owned it as it was just too much fun to drive...........Bill S- Top
