    Proper '72 gas pedal

Hello all, After completely restoring my 4 sp.'72, the final touch was to replace the pedal pads and gas pedal with new ones. The problem is that the new gas pedal is much larger than the old one and frequently gets in the way when going for the brake (can be unnerving at times). The old one was (I destroyed it trying to remove it) the perfect size and I assume it was the original. I called the supplier I got it from and explained the difference and they sent me the "right one" (you gessed it.....exactly the same one again). Could this be for an automatic? Is there a difference? Is the one I need discontinued? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Bob Booth #33372

    Bob,

I expect Joe Lucia will post with part numbers, but in the mean time 1972 was the first year for a non-rectangular gas pedal. The top is wider than the bottom to give extra clearance to the carpet on the right of the pedal. They are the same regardless of transmission.

The 1970-1971 is rectangular. Is there a chance they are selling you the earlier style?

      Terry,

Thanks for responding so quickly! (this board is a wonderful thing, eh?) The pedal you describe is exactly the one I had. The spare pedal I got is at my workplace so I can't check the package label now, but I think it was labeled as the right year. I'll check it tomorrow. Was there any change from '72 to '82? Maybe I'll order one for a later year to be sure to get the right one.

      Thanks again,

      Bob Booth

        Bob----

I expect that the pedal that you have is the 68-71 pedal, GM #3920296. Many of the parts manuals show this pedal to service all 68-72 applications, but that usage is incorrect. Whomever you're buying them from probably doesn't realize that.

As I mentioned, the correct pedal for 68-71 is GM #3920296. From 1972 through 1975 the accelerator pedal part number was GM #6262207 which remained in production through the 1975 model year. In 1976, the part number was changed to GM #368079 which remained in use until the end of C3 production. Since 1976, the GM #368079 pedal has been the only pedal available to SERVICE all 1972-82 Corvette applications. It may be slightly different than the GM #6262207, but I believe that the differences are very minor. The GM #368079 is the part you need and it is still available from GM for a list price of $5.90.

Thanks, Joe. I appreciate it. Prompt, courteous and thorough as usual. I'll give my local dealer a call and see what happens.
