What is the current recommendation for painting a C2. I know they were acrilic lacquer, but is there an acceptable substitute? No one in California will paint lacquer these days. Urathanes and base/clears are apparently forbidden for judging. So what do you use?
Also what is recommended for rust prevention on unpainted suspension parts?

Check the archives, this has been discussed recently. In a nut shell you can paint it with any paint you want it just has to appear to be lacquer.

Ask your painter if he can use single stage products. Several manufacuters make these and they can work in place of lacquer. Problems with them are that they go on glossy and need to be either dulled down by adding gloss retarder to the hood suround and door jams or need to be mechanically dulled after painting of the car. Would rather see a gloss modifier used to dull, it will look more natural and will be dull in all areas including the deep areas around the door hinges that you can not reach when trying to dull by hand. This coatings will show color if needed during judging. Not quite as durable as base coat/clear but better than lacquer.
