Hi, I was looking for general information of 68 hood crossover cable. I was told my cable should be white. I would like to know what other people have. Mine is black casing with a steel rod running through it with a screw clamp on each end. My car is built in May. Can others let me know what they have? Thanks, Terry

Re: 68 hood crossover cable?
Terry-----
1968 was a year that Chevrolet had a lot of trouble figuring out which hood release crossover cable would work for a Corvette. The cable first used was GM #3797115, the same as that used for 63-67 Corvettes. This cable has a spiral wound metal sheath.
At some point, early on, this cable was replaced with another known as GM #3935500. This cable has a black plastic sheath.
Later yet, the 3935500 was replaced by yet another cable, GM #3947959. This cable had a white plastic sheath. It was also used for 1969 models until about October, 1969.
The very late 1969 cable, GM #3966626, used a black plastic sheath, too, the same color as the 2nd design 1968 cable. However, the 39666626 was 31-3/4" long. The 3935500 was longer, but I don't know exactly how long.
So, I'd say that you either have the 2nd design 1968 cable or an incorrect late 1969-76 cable. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 hood crossover cable?
Kurt, I looked at my cable again and found it to be stranded type with the black sheath around a wire spiral. I had been going on memory. My memory is about as sort as a knat's behind. Thanks for the infor. I may have to talk to you about other things on your car if thats ok.
Thanks, Terry- Top

My July 18 BB has a white cable. It is swaged onto the end. The drivers side end has what looks to be an adjustment device, as it has several holes in it. The cable itself has a white sheath over a braided sleeve which is over the actual cable. I'll try to e-mail you some pictures.

Re: 68 hood crossover cable?
Interesting, it seems that some may be wire and some cable??? I recall finding a pair that were different from one another in that respect and could not figure out what was correct. I guess both may be correct. 68 is a funny year car. May sound funny but the more little differences I notice the more I like my car. I have look at a lot of cars and pictures and tried to compare them to my car and found it difficult at times because of all the changes that occured.
Thanks Jim!

Re: 68 hood crossover cable?
Henry your question made me go look at my 68's cable again. I incorrectly stated that my hood cable was a solid wire. It is not a solid wire, it is very small cable type wire. The sheath is or appears plastic to me. Also upon this closer inspection on the passenger side of the cable there are three solid wires that protrude from the cable sheath. Do not see this on the drivers side. I am going to remove my previous message.- Top

Jim:
Thanks for your response. As you may recall from our previous exchanges, my car (11552) was built, if not on the same day, then within one or two days of yours. Therefore, however yours is configured, I can only assume that mine was configured similarly and I will pattern my restoration after yours.
Any additional details that you can provide regarding those three little wires would be very interesting.
Thanks again, Jim!- Top

Re: 68 hood crossover cable?
Henry I looked at my 70 and did not see any wires coming from the sheath like I mentioned on my 68. Today I was looking through a few old Corvette magazines. In a VETTE May 2003 issue on page 57, an article about changing the hood cable, I saw a picture of the cable being replaced on a 1978 Corvette. The picture showed the sheath with the same three solid wires plus the cable. Evidently the sheaths are made this way.- Top
