Your black cable as you describe it is correct.

      Re: 68 hood crossover cable?

Thanks! I believed it to be correct also. The only question I had was whether the cable should be stranded wire or just a plain wire. There may be some variation on that part. Sort of like the hood release handles...they used a wire in 68/69 and then sometime later they switched to a stranded cable.

I remember I carefully cleaned my cable years ago. It had a lot of overspray on it. Any chance if you know if it was in place when the hood was blacked out? Thanks, TErry

        Terry,
My 68 is very early nov '67 build, I've owned since 71. Early cars have a lot of exceptions from what's found in the mid production. Wire is solid as I recall but I'd have to relook to be sure. It had no paint on the cable assembly and also was void of overspray on the latches. This does not necessarily mean they were not assembled at the time but may not have had paint directly sprayed on them. Hard to seperate road grime from paint. Latches are phosphate coated (dark gray)so paint should show up. Remember the engine decal is in this area on the early procuction, paint was definate there (thin and sparce) as it was very clean under the original decal and no bare fiberglass. The rest of the firewall had "bald spots" no black paint applied. It appeared that total paint coverage was not on the agenda. As my restoration was done back in '83 not every thing is as fresh as yesterday.

Re: Hmmm, stranded cable or wire?

Well, I wonder which it is. I have seen 68's both ways with the black housing as I recall. Mine also has simple cable locks on both ends. You just tighten a small hex head screw and it clamps the cable. So you say yours is a solid steel wire? Thanks, Terry

I'm going to have to check again tomorrow. I was just under the hood and I think mine is white with the very thin stranded cable. Mine is a June build.

Terry, I checked the cable this morning. The hood cable is stranded very fine wire, black plastic sheath and the cable thru the fire wall is solid.

I checked all three cars just now.

1963 - cross cable is solid wire with spiral-wound single-wire sheathing, bare. July build.

1968 - cross cable is solid wire with multiple (4?) wire sheathing, white plastic coating.
Handle pull wire is solid. June build.

1979 - cross cable is multistrand thin cable inside white liner with multiple wire sheathing, black plastic coating.
Handle pull wire is solid. August build.
