    1969 Brake Issue

Hi, everyone...I am relatively new to the hobby and only fair with mechanicals. I have lost brake pedal pressure on my 69 BB. I have standard brakes and the car is number and date correct.

To make a long story short, I traced the problem to a leak at the driver rear caliper. The calipers are Delco-Moraine and do not have SS sleeves. They appear to be fully date and number correct for the year. I am using DOT 3 fluid.

    Questions are:
    1. If I replace all 4 with rebuilt calipers with SS sleeved pistons, what on the calipers are judged re: originality? I was going to redo the entire brake system with matched rebuilt SS sleeved calipers and convert the fluid to silicone. Will this result in point deducts? What is critical to maintain in terms of originality on the calipers?
    2. One thought was to pull the calipers and Master Cylinder and send them out to be rebuilt but cannot find anyone locally to do this kind of work. Any suggestions??
    2. I was also going to replace the master cylinder, but am hesitating for the same reasons as the calipers...Thoughts?

    Sal:

The casting numbers are judged. If you have the original calipers on your car, then send them out for sleeving, and mark them to be sure that you get the same ones back. Use a punch, and mark them in an inconspicuous place.
The stainless sleeves cannot be detected. Silicone (DOT 5) fluid cannot be detected, although not recommended. You're better off using a synthetic based DOT 4 fluid, IMHO.
Bair's, and 'Vette Brakes are good shops for the rebuild.
I have always dealt with Art, over at Van Steel. I like their work, and nice to deal with, too.

There are some who recommend using o-ring pistons, but I cannot comment, either way, on that. I have heard that if there is a pulsation issue which is pumping air into your calipers, then o-rings are the cure. Not sure if I go with that one, though!

If you have the original parts, I'd have them rebuild. Lonestar Caliper in Texas specializes in this with pretty reasonable cost/turnaround. Fire up your Google search engine and find their address/phone....

Thanks for the great feedback....I have also been told that Muskegon Brake in WI will ship a matched set of 4 with correct casting numbers for the 1969 model year and re-cycle my old ones. Sound reasonable?
