C1: Correct air filter wing nut

    Hi all,

Does anyone has a picture of a correct air filter wing nut for a 58-60 Vette?

    thanks,
    Rob.

Rob, attached is a photo of 3 wing nuts that I asked about before on my '62. The LH one was on the air cleaner when I bought it, the center was threaded onto the heater cover stud and blacked out in some previous "clean up", and the RH I am not sure whrer I got it.

I think the center one is correct but I am not sure. If I ever get it judged I will bring all three!!

The one on the right is closest to correct, but not exact--most originals I have seen are very similar to that--may have indistinct "notches" along the outer vertical edges.

I believe the one in the middle is the correct one. The one on the right is available at any hardware store. The one in the middle with the larger wings is what I have seen on low mileage original 2X4 air cleaners.

I have only found one in a junk yard.

I am pretty sure the RH one came from Paragon.

I don't know why my response didn't post before, but I'll try again. This is the wing nut that was on the 1960 bow tie car at the Cincinnati regional.

Unfortunately there are no dimension references on any of the pictures but I would say that neither of my wing nuts are the same as the bow tie wing nut. It seemed to have almost a 1:1 ratio of wing width vs inside height. Mine were both much longer than the width. Of course from '60 to '62 they could have changed sources.

The '62 pn is 117204 in the AIM. What was it in '60?

Re: C1: Correct air filter wing nut

I have a set of 2x4s which I bought from a guy over 30yrs ago. The two wingnuts that came with it were of the type on the left. Also, the wingnuts had round, thick paper type gaskets underneath the wingnuts. I still have the wingnuts and one of the gaskets. The threads stripped out of one of the wingnuts many years ago, so I Helicoiled it (yes, I Helicoiled a wingnut) because it was such a unique wingnut and I wanted to save it.

What year were the 2x4's off of? '62 did not have 2x4's. It is very likely the wing nuts changed over the years.

Notice the wing nut that Rick shows a picture of in his post of 8:21 PM--notice the ever-so-slight notches on the wings about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up (lower picture--outer edge of each wing)--that's what I've come to expect on originals--I like the one he has posted very much!!!!

58-59 because the air cleaner was the crimped together one piece type.

Mike what years do you feel used the "notched" wing nuts?

The late Dale Pearman maintained that the wingnuts shown below were the correct ones, and was planning to have them tooled-up several months before he passed away.
