If I order any small parts
from the states for my shop in Canada I use the postal service. If the price is under a certain amount either 200.00 or 300.00 it gets through with fewer charges.
I have woodwork to the states somewhere from 700-900 times with UPS over the last 15 years. In that time they have only lost one packaged and it was back when I didn't have custom made boxes and my packaging sucked. I had boxes made and lined them with Polypropalene and have never had a problem, not once. I never insure the stuff cause it costs too much, one loss of that one package in the beginning and I did have insurance at that time, they paid me right away and I just made new woodwork for the customer.
To get around what I felt was high shipping cost I put it on customers accounts. I figured I am just an ameba but different people I work for are big time so they get preferred rates. I called and sure enough they did.
For many years I got next day UPS for tooling from Toronto to my shop and the cost was under or around 5.00, yesterday and after 20 years later I got a next day ups package the charge was 7.00 and change, parking would have cost more. The package the day before was a little larger it cost 8.00 and change, again next days service.
I recently had to ship with someone other than UPS cause one package was over their girth limit. After many conversations and lots of wrong info from people in UPS I Colomboed my way to Supply Chain Solutions which UPS owns amongst others and used to be Minlow then used to be Emery or something or other. I got a price, I got a quote number and ventured down to the Toronto Depot. Paperwork was done, all went well and after it was loaded I decided to be Colombo again and asked them to confirm the price. Turns out it was now over three times what I was quoted. This was on a big customers account and they probably would not care, but I cared. They offered the package back and said to call them, hell with that, I went back in the front door, asked for the person who priced this that there was a problem. Gave them the number I was already quoted from the states, they honered the price which was a very fair price. The lesson again for me was to double check everyone.
UPS has always taken four days to ship from North of Toronto to different places in the US by standard or economy what ever they call that baseline mode.
There have been times over the years that I have had questions over and above the ladies on the phone and sometimes I refused to take their info, I wanted to talk to a supervisor. 20 plus years of being self employed and dealing with all kinds of people who didn' know what they were talking about or didn't care or sold me garbadge or let me down in some way my patience with crap is barely existance. It was hard to get to people with power have to aggree with that.
I have been fortunate, they have worked well for me, i also have an excellent driver and he has done favour stuff many times on my last minute shipments, I think he one of the longest drivers with them, he carried stuff out of my shop years ago when I was injured cause he didn't want me doing it.
Not disagreeing with you, just letting you know they have worked well for me and why, with so many of you unhappy customers this does'nt mean much, seems to me they need to wake up.
