If I order any small parts

from the states for my shop in Canada I use the postal service. If the price is under a certain amount either 200.00 or 300.00 it gets through with fewer charges.

I have woodwork to the states somewhere from 700-900 times with UPS over the last 15 years. In that time they have only lost one packaged and it was back when I didn't have custom made boxes and my packaging sucked. I had boxes made and lined them with Polypropalene and have never had a problem, not once. I never insure the stuff cause it costs too much, one loss of that one package in the beginning and I did have insurance at that time, they paid me right away and I just made new woodwork for the customer.

To get around what I felt was high shipping cost I put it on customers accounts. I figured I am just an ameba but different people I work for are big time so they get preferred rates. I called and sure enough they did.

For many years I got next day UPS for tooling from Toronto to my shop and the cost was under or around 5.00, yesterday and after 20 years later I got a next day ups package the charge was 7.00 and change, parking would have cost more. The package the day before was a little larger it cost 8.00 and change, again next days service.

I recently had to ship with someone other than UPS cause one package was over their girth limit. After many conversations and lots of wrong info from people in UPS I Colomboed my way to Supply Chain Solutions which UPS owns amongst others and used to be Minlow then used to be Emery or something or other. I got a price, I got a quote number and ventured down to the Toronto Depot. Paperwork was done, all went well and after it was loaded I decided to be Colombo again and asked them to confirm the price. Turns out it was now over three times what I was quoted. This was on a big customers account and they probably would not care, but I cared. They offered the package back and said to call them, hell with that, I went back in the front door, asked for the person who priced this that there was a problem. Gave them the number I was already quoted from the states, they honered the price which was a very fair price. The lesson again for me was to double check everyone.

UPS has always taken four days to ship from North of Toronto to different places in the US by standard or economy what ever they call that baseline mode.

There have been times over the years that I have had questions over and above the ladies on the phone and sometimes I refused to take their info, I wanted to talk to a supervisor. 20 plus years of being self employed and dealing with all kinds of people who didn' know what they were talking about or didn't care or sold me garbadge or let me down in some way my patience with crap is barely existance. It was hard to get to people with power have to aggree with that.

I have been fortunate, they have worked well for me, i also have an excellent driver and he has done favour stuff many times on my last minute shipments, I think he one of the longest drivers with them, he carried stuff out of my shop years ago when I was injured cause he didn't want me doing it.

Not disagreeing with you, just letting you know they have worked well for me and why, with so many of you unhappy customers this does'nt mean much, seems to me they need to wake up.

Re: UPS is teamsters and FEDEX is

I have no idea who runs UPS, but if you haven't read the story of how Fred Smith founded FEDEX, and what its mission/vision remains today --I recommend it.

FEDEX's location in my city is SO much more professional than UPS. The difference in appearance and atmosphere is just striking. The UPS counter personnel always seem so demoralized. My FEDEX counter clerk is a high energy, "can-do" guy who has obviously been trained in customer service & satisfaction.

When you add the fact that FEDEX is 30% cheaper -- I don't need an MBA to choose.

        Re: I HATE UPS

I will NEVER, EVER, use UPS as long as there are other means of shipping. There isn't enough room on this entire board to describe some of the unbelievable things that have happened to me over the years because of their additude and careless way of handling packages, not to mention their outrageous prices and worthless insurance.

Re: UPS is teamsters and FEDEX is

I had HP build me a new computer last week, and they notified me on Tuesday, November 8th that it was shipped from Shanghai on that day via FedEx; I expected to see it early next week, and it showed up at my door at noon on Wednesday, November 9th. That's efficiency!

We are not the only ones...

Seems that UPS has lots of friends with the Corrado crowd too.

I think everyone has overlooked one thing. Altho I haven't a bad experience with UPS, if you owned a company that spends at "LEAST" 20 to 30 million a year in NASCAR, who do you think is going to foot the bill???

                      Re: I HATE UPS

I purchased a 63 windshield from a Vendor in Ohio. It was shipped UPS to me in Mich at a cost of around $ 60. It was the wrong one (tinted) and I returned it via UPS, in the same box, to the same shipping adress and it cost $115.00. When I questioned the higher return shipping cost, I was told that the Vendor has lower rates , because they ship more than I do...
I can see 10% higher, but not 90%.
On other occation, I shipped items via USPS and they were much cheaper than UPS. I also like Fedex, especially heavy items, such as engine blocks and the like. They have Fedex Ground...
I will refrain from using UPS, if possible...

                          Re: I HATE UPS

Bad UPS story with happy ending:

The first Corvette parts I ever sold & shipped were via UPS, in the early 80's. I'd advertised the parts with a firm price. A buyer called me several times trying to cajole me into lowering my already ridiculous price (near-NOS 84 cross-ram w/manifold, air cleaner & distributor for less than the cost of a cross-ram rebuild). When he called to say he'd pay my price, I insisted on COD payment, since he struck me as a con man. I checked the COD box on the UPS ticket, but when I handed it to the UPS clerk, he didn't notice it, and I didn't realize the shipping charge didn't include COD. After about 3 or 4 weeks I hadn't received payment, and called UPS. They investigated. It turned out the buyer's small business front was closed for lunch when the package arrived, and since the package wasn't marked COD, the driver left it next door. When I called the buyer about it, he raved over the like-new condition of the parts, but refused to pay me ("UPS has insurance"), and positively gloated over getting the parts for free!!! UPS checked their records and found that my copy of the ticket matched theirs, with the COD box checked, so they did pay me. UPS was the good guy in this story.

That said, lately I, too, have switched to Fedex because they give better service at lower price.

Re: I have asked for US Mail

I agree with the criticism of UPS; not so much for the delivery time, etc, but for the cost. On shipments to Canada they use a border broker that seems to have a starting rate of about $40.00/shipment (and then increases with shipment value). I've sometimes had to pay 30-50% of the value of my smaller parts orders just for the "customs brokerage" fees.

USPS has been a pleasant surprise. My wife and I bought a neon beer sign at last winter's meet in Orlando. The sign cost $50.00, and it wasn't until we were back at the car that it dawned on us there might be a problem bringing it home on a commercial aircraft. A call to the airline confirmed it was a "no-no".

I bought a box, some bubble wrap and some plastic "macaroni" (from the UPS store!) and mailed the sign to myself for the princely sum of $21.00. It arrived earlier than the three weeks quoted (ground shipment because of the neon), and the outer packaging was absolutely pristine; you wouldn't know it had ever been handled. The light was in perfect shape and is decorating our downstairs bar....

                            Go postal!

                              The drop game

Not only that Jerry, but I believe the workers must play some sort of "drop it off the top of the truck" game with anything marked fragile. First one to break the contents wins............. Extra points for heavy duty crates or boxes with banding straps. They seem to enjoy the challenge of breaking something that's better packed........

                                I hate UPS!

I can't resist, sometime back I tried sending my Wonderbar radio for restoration via UPS, with appropriate insurance. The most they would insure it for was $100 unless I had the original package. I stated that the original package was a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette! They would not budge so I left, found FEDEX Ground down the street and will never use UPS again!
