Packaging, there is a good one. A few years ago, we sold some glass items on eBay. We wrapped everything sold extremely well in bubble wrap and paper. We got to the UPS office (regular UPS facility, not a plaza storefront) and the agent immdeiately opened it to examine each piece and not wrap it anywhere nearly as well. We were then told that because of it being glass, they would not insure it against the breakage since it wasn't in the original packaging.
Well, I guess not after they tore it all apart!!!!!
And we did have some in the original packaging which we know would break because it was simply thin layers of paper.
We took it all back home, rewrapped it the right way again, and used the 800 number to call for pickup. Ironically, the pickup service was LESS than the drop-off service. This was before FedEx was so cheap.
If you use UPS, use the website to get prices. They vary by a lot depending on drop off, pick up, etc.
Also, the pickup has the interesting situation that they do not weigh items. Invariably, we would weigh a package at one weight, take it to UPS, and they have a different weight, usually just over the next rate break.
When they pick it up, they take whatever weight you write down. I'm not suggesting you cheat, but it sure helps stop them from gouging you when you know your scales are accurate.
The same thing happened shipping some slicks. I taped the address to them per the UPS site, took them there, and they rejected them for no boxes. They did give me boxes, but that added a bunch of weight, so I left. I called for pickup and they took them bare with no hassle.
