Re: i never said the rebuild would be good

    Clem,

The sand (glass bead?) in the carb, especially the small passages and tubes, was the worst part. The incorrect jets and rods didn't help either.

Re: the old holleys were build and rebuild

One would think one of the four rebuilders would have known what you said. The leak was caused by the float level and not cleaned out(dirt). New filter showed no dirt but dirt would loosen up and build up in the carb.then no power. After a few tests on the road a light went off and it was a easy fix. No problems in about ten years with the carb.

          older Qjets have a problem

the ones with the filter nut gasket on the outside of the main body. even after installing a heli coil for the filter nut the moisture has attacked the dichromate and the zink carb body starts giving off little pieces of debris which get into the needle seat and causes flooding. the way to stop that problem is to solder a very very fine screen on to the bottom inlet side of the needle seat to prevent this debris from get into the needle seat

I wouldn't bet on it based on feedback from others.

when you bead blast carbs you must put

all the screws back in the threaded holes or you will have trouble getting the glass beads out. soaking the carb in soapy water will break down the static charge the beads have and that makes them hard to remove

Re: Carb resto cost. and much more

Holley rebuilt/restored the carbs on wunna' my 67 L71's and I was completely satisfied (with the exception of the hex bolts and white neoprene washers they put on the float bowls) The finish was right and they work well.

Now if y'all wanna talk about the problem I had with Chicago Corvette on a wiper motor......................
