Looking at the P-o-P imprint on that Rosen-Novak work order, I make out the trans assy code of P7M29 (August 29, 1967 model year). Comparing with P-o-P of Tony DiLorenzo car # 9097, which has trans code of P717 for July 17th (ie. the old 1966 and prior model year method of coding). Many are saying that Tony's car was the first L88, and I have no reason to doubt this.
My hypothesis is that GM made a "batch" of M22's (just like the M22's of late April 1965). Car #9097 got one of this assembly run, even though the car was produced 6 months later.
All the more strange that supposed L88 # 2390 happens to have its M22 coded like a vanilla Muncie. Can just hear St.Louis calling Indiana plant and requesting they build one more M22, with appropriate assy coding to match the other 4-speeds on the line.
Just a thought.
P.S. The reason I have # 9097's data is a group of us in western Canada delivered this car to Wayne Walker (of Zip fame) at Bloomington of 1983. Took pics of warranty book.
