    Re: Phony Ebay Notice

I get those every day, and have for months - I just forward them to spoof@ebay.com, then delete; also get them from (fake) PayPal, Wells Fargo Bank, and several others - the spammers/scammers send them out by the millions every day.

      Michael -

Just click on "Forward", and address it to spoof@ebay.com, send, then delete it.

Three big clues this is fraud.

        Dear Member,

eBay never addresses "Dear Member" but always by your name on the account.

Sing to your eBay account at

Misspelled "sign" and the sentence structure is wrong. "Sing to your account"? What does that mean? Is this American Idol?

        http://signin.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll? SignIn&ssPageName=h:h:sin:US

The link you see may look good, but when you roll the mouse over the original email, you will see the real link in the status bar at the bottom of Netscape and Internet Explorer. If it is an IP address (something like http://207.155.25.14/ebay-signin/...), it isn't eBay. Unless you have tracing software, you won't know where that IP address is located. It can quite easily be someone's personal computer set up with a personal web page software that is good as long as he has his computer logged in. Log back on and the IP changes for those with dynamic addressing (i.e., most of us unles syou pay for a static IP).

Most are mass mail sending, so your passwords are usually safe because they are simply sending to all the email addresses that they find or generate. They don't really know you exist, or they would change that "Dear Member" to "Dear gr8vette@yahoo.com" or whatever.

        Just don't answer.

I forgot to mention that a link trick many are using is to have a link something like this:

At first, many think this is ebay, but it is actually the domain of support32, whoever or whatever that may be. It is a simple trick that is unfortunately very effective at fooling people, because they think it is ebay support. It isn't.

The last word before the ".com", ".net", ".org" and so on is the domain, not the earlier names.

            Mark,

Yes, when I rolled the curser over the link that was supposed to be ebay, the link that showed up in the status bar was completely different. It was a different language and was incredibly long. Contained about twelve words plus a few odd characters. I get about three or four of these a day but this was the first that popped up a perfect ebay sign in page.

I've already won millions of dollars, all expense paid trips around the world and offers to participate in just about every "quick cash" scheme there is. I can retire comfortibly now, as soon as those checks and tickets start rolling in.

I always love those free trips to Florida I win.

Hey, where am I going to fly to for THAT one?
Get on at MCO, circle the field, and land?

Yes, it's called "a free round trip" ticket. Round the airport a few times.
