    Re: LS-6 ragtop drag racing accomplishments

    I heard that the ZL1 Camaro was a rebody with a replacement motor. Also the automatic trans hurt it as it seems that everyone wants a 4 speed. I too was also surprised that the Green L88 brought 220K. It seems that there is a huge difference from one car to the next and I think color along with good provenance is what it will take to bring record $$$.

      Steve,

      That's what I found out too about the ZL-1. However the Riverside Gold L-88 is a warranty replacement block, and I thought it had also be restamped again.

      I did not hear if the Fathom Green was the thee original engine, but if it was, I don't see how a low mileage replacement engine car should outsell an original restored car.

        I would think that the green car had a replacement motor as well. Contrary to what people that have now been starting to collect L88 Corvettes say ie "mine has its original motor" there are VERY few original motored L88s left.

          Steve,

          Last year at Bloomington Gold Corvettes, I was "hot to trot" for that '69 Burgundy L-88 coupe, a survivor example. I bid it to 175K, thinking that was a reasonable amount for a 'tired' looking one. Never did find out what reserve was. Heard that it was Dana Mecums car after it went thru auction. Since Jim Mattison sold his Riverside Gold coupe for 162K at 2004, I figured my bid was appropriate.

          I'm now hunting down another LS-6 car to start doing the Pure Stock Drags route. These guys are having a ball!

            I think $350 to get in or just to bid is extremely high and watching those people taking the bids are so in your face it's sicking.

              Gary;

              It is a little unnerving (annoying), I went thru this auction process as a seller in 2001. My car was on the brink of meeting reserve, Drew Alcazar of Russo & Steele, came over to me in a flurry wanting me to drop reserve, kept hounding me, it seemed like forever, although the whole experience of selling the car was over in less than one and a half minutes!

              Something I didn't realize was that the auction co has the right to reduce their commission fees. I had a reserve of 70K, car bid to 71K, Russo and Steele dropped their sellers commission and only took the buyers side. I ended up with $70,200 and they sold the car even though I didn't agree to drop the reserve.

                Seems like they used to be a little more professional about it....maybe it's just me....although I was entertained it is very paradish which people all over the place, jumping on stage etc....they even managed to bring Mr. Shelby down a noch or two IMO.
