There are many rules, and if you want to buy outside, beware that some monitor and turn in people, because what it does is create a place where simply put, sales are not fair.

Since everyone knows the owner can bid, it isn't a problem. It is like most things in life, if it is out in the open, you can decide how you personally want to deal with it.

When it is hidden, then it is a problem. That is what shill bidding on eBay is, hidden. You do not know the owner is bidding you up.

This is also one place eBay is falling down badly. A friend complained about buying a parts car on eBay. He bid something like $1900 and lost with it at $2000 or whatever. The winner disappeared.

The seller then offered a Second Chance. The friend was pretty sure it was a shill bid, because here was a bidder who located the same general area, never bid on anything automotive, only small priced stuff, and so on.

He argued with eBay and the seller, the winner disappeared, the bid should be cancelled and the bids allowed to run back to indicate he is the winner, at $1100 where he beat the third place guy, not where he lost to the pseudo-winner. This is actually the correct eBay method for dealing with deadbeat winners, per their rules, however, eBay does not enforce it.

He now snipes in the last few seconds so that shills don't have a chance to bid him up.

Joe, I think your points are well taken. I must admit that I have never read the E Bay rules. I have never sold anything on E Bay; I use it to find parts I need and as a pricing barometer for things I sell/trade. I have always assumed that the listings were a flat fee (I did not know about % commissions on top of a sale). I know that ignorance is no excuse. I will need to think on this a bit to decide how I will approach E bay listings in the future. G.

I was selling a vehicle once. One had something like "if you win, $xxx deposit within 3 days. If you view the vehicle and it isn't as described, you will be refunded your deposit minus all ebay fees I have to pay."

I just thought that was reasonable, since I was letting the guy out, but not at a loss to me.

I got busted for it. It is against the rules to charge them for "eBay fees". Apparently, that is because eBay refunds on a non-paying bidder, although they really don't refund them all.

It is amazing how many have time on their hands to do nothing but turn in others.
