Is there a Quiet side exhaust?

I know that this is an oxymoron but is there a quiet side exhaust? I have a 65 that sounds like a Harley with open pipes. Tonight I was pulled over and the cop let me go because he really liked the car but he said the car is too loud!

I just got the car so I am not exactly sure what is on it but does anyone know if there is a quiet set of side pipes available?

Ask the coffee drinkin', donut eatin' cop

If there is some local standard your car has to meet as recorded on a decimeter? I think that's the right word. If he doesn't have a standard, I would suggest you tell him to go bag it in his a...

If you have factory sidepipes, then he is out of luck also. If they were sold by GM for road use, they are legal.

BTW, NEVER plead guilty on a Loud Mufflers charge, even in lieu of a speeding ticket. In many states, this falls under Disturbing the Peace and you get hit with a Class C misdemeanor. That stays on your permanent record forever.

I have run a small block past a sound meter with Hooker chrome header sidepipes with street mufflers and have the following:

          Average temperature - 80 degrees, humidty - don't remember
Distance - 50 feet from centerline of road, to car may vary
Terrain - flat and open, no obstructions or reflectors
Sound level measured on the A scale - 91 dB.

The Corvette side exhaust should be relatively close.

Not if there is a God. Seriously, though...

Mark is right, if you have Chevy (or exact copy) mufflers, and the iron manifolds on the engine, then it should be legal. About 30 years ago, a trooper in NJ pulled a guy over, and cited him for loud exhaust. Seems he was the original owner, and his name ended with "Esq.". End of the story was the NJ high court held that if the DMV allowed it to be sold new in NJ, it was defacto approved. And yes, don't plead guilty. Unless you were driving like an idiot, that is.

If they are stock original he cant do any thing to you, I get stopped in my 55 for having screens over the head light and plastic cover over the license plate. I keep the owners manual with the pic. To prove it came that way.

                  Us Cops Changed to Bagels

We changed from donuts to bagels or bran muffins at the suggestion of our butchers, er, I mean doctor, because the butchers shark, er, I mean lawyer, suggested it. Oh, Mark Milner, in Michigan, the only traffic violations that stay on your record permanetly are drinking/drug driving and fleeing and eluding.

Re: Us Cops Changed to Bagels

When they switch to Disturbing the Peace and make it a Class C Misdemeanor, it is no longer Traffic but Criminal law you are dealing with.

Traffic law is amazing - you can be guilty until proven innocent. You can also find you have no rights we all assume we have - no right to jury trial, no rights to counsel, no rights to face accusers, and so on. And it varies greatly from state to state, so in one state you may get away with something that ends up being a really big deal in another.

Re: Us Cops Changed to Bagels

Most states have changed the majority of their traffic laws from misdemeanors to civil infractions, which requires less proof to convict. But, most police agencies would frown on changing an excessive noise violation (traffic civil infraction) to a non-traffic misdeameanor unless the person was being the biggest idiot in the world. If that was the case, they have many more options available to them than disturbing the peace. Whatever, I don't think it happens very often, so lets talk about Corvettes.

Oh Yes,,, I saw someone's bumper sticker that read, "BAD COP... NO Donut" I'm sure that driver was real happy he stuck it on there cause the guy with the gray hat was walking up to his window with a ticket in his hand. I'm sure the boys back at the barracks had a good laugh over that one.

                          in defense of the cops

I'm really glad SOMEBODY is out there looking out for us, I wouldn't risk my life for as little as many of them get paid!

Most aren't as bad as we think. About 25 years ago when I was in college, I owned 2 V8 Monzas. I was in traffic going 20 in a 45 zone behind a little old lady for several miles and finally the road opened up to 2 lanes each way. Needless to say, my foolish youth and testosterone was too much to resist and I passed her sideways at about 6000 RPM and just a little faster than 45 .

I truly deserved a HUGE ticket for that one - the cop was sitting on a side street right there, I could see the look on his face! Actually he was really decent about it, talked with me like a father about how I could have killed myself and others for about 30 minutes and let me off with "spinning wheels". I think he secretly got a big kick out of it. 1 point and $30, and I actually learned something that day and have since driven much more safely around others.
