    C1 - 61 Removing transmission

I have a bad throw-out bearing and need to drop the trans. Last time i did this, I lowered it from under the cat by removing the shifter and unbolting the trans from the bellhousing. I have also pulled the entire drive train out the top for other reasone. Question: is it easire for the third option; dropping it out from below WITH the bellhousing? I should note I have a munci with an 11" bellhousing. My thought is that I can leave the linkage on because I won't have to pull it back so far to get the pilot shaft out. Any thoughts???
    Thanks!!!

I've found it easiest to remove the transmission alone for the repair you have in mind; removing the shift linkage is no big deal and having it out gives you a chance to check the alignment of all parts so shifting is as it should be.

I agree, just remove the tranny. Had mine out several times chasing down a vibration in my '59 with a Muncie. Rebuilt the tranny, replaced release bearing and pilot bushing. That didn't help. Installed the proper tranny mount adapter for the Muncie, changed the driveline angle (lowered the back of the tranny with spacers), then I finaly installed the longer driveshaft yoke. Problem solved.

A pair of headless bolts for tranny/bellhousing guide pins, a plastic plug for the back of the tranny, not turning the input shaft (so it goes back in the same), and tall safety stands to give you enough clearance will make the job easier. Pat

Thanks Pat and Ed! That's how I did it last time and I was wondering about the other way, now I can stop wondering! I also just bought some 6 ton stands and have the car up 24" off the garage floor, much better and safer than the 3 ton stands up on wood blocks. Thanks for the advise, and I'll let you know how I do later today or tomorrow during the nor'easter we're getting starting tonight.
        Thanks again!!!
