    C2:67 Clutch Boot Follow up

Well, I pulled the clutch boot off, and I found the third hole with an awl. The holes in the firewall looked like pilot holes with never a screw in them. The boot looked like it never had any screws in it, and was just held in place with mastic. See the lower left ear:

No evidence of a screw being on this boot.

    Here's the back:

Number on the front is 22 with a combined JR, and I'm pretty sure it is my original.

I think the coffee break theory on the assembly line is true.

Put a repro on loose while I had the clutch rod disconnected. Will finish with your screws.

i'd install the replacement boot with the one fastner it left the factory with. if and when the judges question this idiosyncacy, offer to remove the single fastner, slid the boot down the clutch rod and show em the absence of holes in the other two areas. it'll be "as it left st louis" amd i'd not deduct. mike

Jerry, the repro clutch boots are pretty much junk. I'm on my third one and it's broken and I have a new repro(#4) waiting to be installed.

don: get a can of aerosol teflon(wal-mart) and periodically spray the rod. i use the teflon on 56-62 door window channels as the repo fuzzies are a tad tight and the teflon reduces friction and makes for easy roling up and down of windows. it also comes in handy when installing firewall grommets, midyear door glass into the channel liners, and the mushroom shaped firewall insulation fastners on c-1 and c-2. never tried substituting it for the typical uses of KY Jelly, tough. good luck with #4 boot. mike
