Re: Top Flight possible with replacement trim tag
The car must have the correct attached, Chevrolet factory Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate, or attached valid state-approved replacement ID plate which matches title and/or registration.
Roy, I have a car with a repro vin tag that was approved by the head of the Department of Motor Vehicles of the State of Florida. In conversation with you last year you said my car would not be judged because of it. If it is approved by the state, why not? If the wording of the judging manual stated "state issued" I could understand it not being judged. I have a lot of supporting documentation that reinforces my vin number, including the frame confidential numbers. You told me that the reason NCRS won't judge a repro vin tag is "because we are trying to prevent auto theft" I don't think that is the responsibility of NCRS. Perhaps NCRS should reconsider their edict.

Re: Top Flight possible with replacement trim tag
Preventing auto theft was the reason you gave. I was surprised and said so at the time. Re: reproduction vin tag approved by the state You also told me that "that would not fly in Oklahoma? because the DMV people there are trained to spot repro tags". Either way, if one can provide concrete prove of the vin number of his car as I can, what is the harm in judging the car with a repro tag? I am not trying to make my car worth more money, just trying to enjoy the sport I have been involved in for 30 years. How do I prove the tag I have was approved by the state? Is my file on the car and all the police reports and legal documents enough? Or am I going to be embarassed at a show after having spent thousands of dollars to get there? Can I provide the info I have before hand to save the time and money?- Top

Re: Top Flight possible with replacement trim tag
Sure send me copies of what you have, also send them to the national team leader. We certainly can try to accomodate any situation, but the burden of proof is your responsibility. Has the florida DMV been told it is a reproduction VIN plate? Did you provide proof to them before it was tilted? Or as I mentioned earlier did they title it not knowing it was a reproduction? I assume there was some sort of documentation for Florida if they signed off on it.- Top

Re: Top Flight possible with replacement trim tag
Lyndon,
The basic judging criteria is:
"Cars are to be judged to the standard of appearance, and as equipped, at the time and point of final assembly by the Chevrolet Motor Division....."
therefore the expectation of the original GM VIN and trim tags.

Talk about a timely political issue. You can almost draw a comparision to what is going on with the immigration issue... It is either legal or illegal...it is either original on not original... What is so hard to understand with either? JMHO is no gray here in either worlds. Doesn't illegal mean not leagal, and doesnt replacement mean nor the original? Unless, in either case, you have documentation.... to make it legal... Sorry I work for US Customs and Border Protection...so maybe you understand my comparision..hear it every day...- Top

"Is it possible to top flight a car with a replacement trim or vin tag or both"
That's a good question - same one came to my mind while reading the latest Restorer, wherein a car (C2) was being discussed and mention of it having lost its original trim tag was made, about a sentence or two away from the fact that it recently top flighted. I know the NCRS has really raised the bar on Trim Tags in the last few years given the recent Trim Tag reference book, so I was a bit mystified by this, as the trim tag on the subject car had to have been a repro (can't TF without a trim tag). hmm.65 MM Convertible, L76 (365 hp)- Top
