Re: East Coast / West Coast..Phooey!!

      Rob..It sure does!

Every car can be its owners own masterpiece..whether restored or unrestored. If you believe this there are affordable Corvettes to be had...and to be found.

For me ..unrestored cars regardless of condition..offer a window to the past that fully restored cars lose in the process.

I am for restoration as it is the driving force behind the hobby but there is a special character inherent in unrestored cars that reflect the cars history and owners..that cannot be matched.

These cars don't need ribbons or accolades..just good caretakers!

Rob..if you want a fun afternoon..look up and go see Leroy Grannis in Oceanside. Leroy is a Hall of fame Surf photgrapher...and great guy.

I have not talked to him in a couple years ..so I am assuming he is still alive.

You can check out his book Photo: Grannis..Surfing's Golden Age..1960-1969..his photography is inspiring like the picture below.

Another great guy is John Dahl..my friend that owns Wax Research and makes Sticky Bumps Surf Wax. He also just bought the foam core surf board business that the owner closed down.

        Tell them I said hello.

You see even as a midwest guy..I have found the world can be your friend.

          Re: I have questions

I'm with Kurt on this one. I also thought that due to the weather conditions (or in this case the lack there of) the season never ended! Also the mild climate is easy on steel cars. There are no old cars, here in CT. They rusted away. Quickly. That's why we call 'em Rustangs!

Be very cautious when buying an old East Coast car. Specially any f_rd from the '60s.

            Joe,

Great words of wisdom that I agree with totally. There really is something special about an unrestored car - it tells a unique and special story all it's own.

Throughout most of my life I have been in the ocean, surfing all over the world and enjoying every minute of it. I even worked for many years in the surf industry during high school and while obtaining my degree. I'm very familiar with Wax Research and the work of Grannis (althought I don't know them personally). I'll hit up some of my buddies still in the business and try to contact them and pass along a hello from you.

            All the best,
            Rob

Re: East Coast / West Coast..Phooey!!

My perception from the midwest has always been that California is the king of street rods, customs and racing. Here in St.Louis, every time I go to a cruise or show, I'm amazed at how many cars and the quality of all the cars. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. And, I see a lot of younger guys and gals involved.

If you think Ca. Cars are rust free , don't buy one from the ocean city towns like SF ever hear of salt water and seen a car that lived it's life in SF.

Re: East Coast / West Coast Logic

As I gaze lovingly at my rust free California donor frame and then agonizingly stare at my original "swiss cheese" frame, it's no wonder all the automotive action is on the the "Right" coast Roy.

If it isn't the salt water and humidity, it's the salt water and the winters.

                  It's a restoration vendor's dream come true.

Now where did I put the good doctor's book this time? Oh yeah the throne room

Re: East Coast / West Coast Logic

That's the point most all mid-west parts go East because you guys pay more, were cheap because most of ours are OK!
That means few swap meets and parts.

                      I have easy answers.

                      1. Why are most great swap meets back east

1000 miles on the East Coast gets you from the border of Florida to Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, etc. 1000 miles in California gets you from LA to Riverside, or it seems that way. Lot more towns, a lot more going on, so travel isn't as far, so more go.

                      2. Why are most Corvette dealer back east selling ( classics)

A lot of little restoration shops set up for those nasty northern and midwest winters where you can either stay in the house or in the garage as you can't do anything else. So they make a lot of cars. In LA, winter is a 2 hour ride to the mountains to ski until noon, then a 2 hour ride back to surf in the afternoon. Who wants to work in the garage?

                      3. Why are most big car shows back east

                      See #1.

                      4. Why are most arguments over C2's

See Michael Hanson's answer. Everyone is a C2 expert.

                      5. Why do most people back east pay more for parts then out west

                      More competition for the parts.

                      6. Why are most great cars back east

More money floating around, I guess. I can't find any of it, though.

                      7. Why are most restoration shops back east and or the parts rebuilt.
Her in the west Ca. Sucks! and has the least of anything going on.
Inquiring minds wont to know. MINE!!

                      Go back to #2.

But Roy, you have the best of both worlds!

A C2 sitting under a Ponderosa Pine in your backyard in the Sierra's.

                        Any more questions.
