    '67 hood: blackout/paint margin

I have 2 questions regarding the blackout and paint margin on the underside of my 67 small block hood. I see in the JG that "In the hinge area, the structure curves in toward the hood approx. 1/4". At this point, the blackout does not follow the curve in the structure. The blackout runs in a straight line consistent with the upper portion of the hood".

    My questions are:

    a. Does this rule apply since my car is a black car? (difficult to even see the break line), and

    b. if there is still a breakline between the blackout and paint margin on a black car, does the paint margin go along the front of the hood too, or does it just stop just past the hinges with no paint along the front of the hood past the hinges?

    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Another question on a 67 S/B hood.

Which was done first, the hood blackout or the exterior paint. Would drip marks of the exterior paint along the side of the hood over the blackout, be a sign of a repaint.

Re: Another question on a 67 S/B hood.

Picture this, The body is already painted, a mask is placed over the hood with it in the up position. The mask does not fit very close anywhere along the edges that are exposed. So the blackout is basicly straight with fuzzy edges, as opposed to a tape line. Near the hinge area the mask stops and the black out tends to spread out on the hood edge and looses its form as it fades out. There is little or no blackout that reaches beyond the front lower hood brace, because it would be blocked by the radiator support and the angle of attack. Its s UAW masterpiece.

        Wayne,

That's a very good description of the hood blackout operation. That's just exactly how it was done.

Here are a couple of pictures. The top one is of the front portion of the hood black out. Original low miles car. It is one of the neatest that I have ever seen. Typically the black out will spread out in the area near and in front of the hinge. The lower is inner fender area near the hood hinge. Note the mass of factory crud in the area of the hinge, and the smattering of black out.

                Great information Wayne

And to think that I was going to take the hood off to redo the blackout. Now I can do it the UAW way with all the imperfections.
