Re: Wish you all well and good by

    Kurt,

Reading some of your recent posts through my "day job" eyes, I've been wondering recently if you shouldn't be on an antidepressant. As much time, energy and money as you've put into your 68 and getting the details hammered down on that car, I can't figure out why you keep thinking your car will "never be worthy" and why having your car judged would be "humiliating." This isn't the first time you've compared your car to "million dollar trailer queens." And I'd doubt there were any cars there worth $1M unless some race car was present that I'm not aware of.

Some of my comment above is tongue-in-cheek, but having judged cars for 14+ years I can tell you that there can be a LOT of small things "non-typical" or not correct about a car and still have it make a Top Flight. 270 points "allowable" and you'd still have it. I doubt you have 270 one-point items on that car, or even 135 2-point items.

I would say that while some judging events were frustrating when I took my 72 through the Flight and Bowtie systems, overall it was a pleasurable event. Perhaps we could arrange some goal-directed therapy with a good therapist to work on your self esteem?

Seriously, give it some thought. You'll never have a National as close as it will be next year, and I sure hope to meet you there. And, after reading your hundreds of posts over the past several years, I REALLY want to see your 68 in person.

If people like Roy didn't share

      Roy,

There are those in our hobby who restore for the money, those who restore for the love of the car and those who just simply love the car and drive them. You definitely fit in and you've always shared your knowledge with others freely. We commend you for what you've given to our hobby.

For me, I fell in love with Corvettes when I was 9 and saw a '54 in the showroom. I fell in love all over again when I purchased my first Corvette (see attached photo) which was an early '54 and I collected parts for it for, maybe, 12 years. People like you, Roy, helped me through finding the tougher parts. Unfortunately, I sold it before I could finish it ... that was prior to the TDB's existence. Had the TDB been in existence while I owned the car and we had met through our posted conversations, most of which would have been your answers to my questions, I would probably still have SN E54S001362.

Roy, I have always enjoyed your input throught this technical discussion board and will miss reading your every post.

      All my best,
      Kent #6201

        This wouldn't look so good

        Roy,

I was almost there, but this is how she appeared the last time I saw her with restoration completed by the new owner.

          1956 owner's manual

My neighbor just gave me a 56 2nd edition owner's manual. I tried to find a repro at Paragon but they do not seem to carry. Are these available?

I do want to sell. Just checking out what he gave me.

          Thanks

                      Roy,

You gotta stay. I am even thinking about putting mud flaps on my 67 because of your inspiration. You're one of the few fellows I know that readily shares his wealth of knowledge that has been obtained over many years. I especially liked how to adjust a hood on a 56/7 (my car gave me fits), and other tid bits that I couldn't figure out. Now can I get my 55 back at a "reasonable" cost?

Stay Roy, it's in your blood!

                        Roy -

Chill out and enjoy a cold one! There are as many opinions on what a Corvette should be as there are members at any event; fortunately, individual opinions and expression aren't regulated, and we're all free to do whatever we like with our cars, and enjoy them for what we like about them.

Stick around - I don't always agree with everyone either, but that doesn't mean I'm not having fun

Re: Wish you all well and good by

                          Larry,
I had several similiar expericences at local NCRS meetings and have felt "left out" but continued to attend because I wanted to learn more about my car. I have suggested several times that at local meetings we follow something I learned when I was in a GTO club. At the beginning of each meeting, each person would give their name, city they lived in and what year and model GTO they owned. This "broke the ice" and new members would feel comfortable of putting a name to a face. I think more importance should be placed on welcoming new members and making them feel part of the group.
I too, hope that Roy hangs around here and remains part of this group. Oh yeah, my name is Rick Smith, I live in Beverly Hills, and I have a 67 Goodwood green roadster. Welcome!

                              Hi Roy:
I've had my 61 since 2000 but only on the road since 2001 and hav put 0ver 18,000 miles on it. I drive it to work 50% of the time in the summer or more (and any other day that the forcast isn't rain from March- December), and I work construction. I drove it from the Boston area to Carlisle for the past few years as well. People are always raggin on me to get it painted, but it's original and I don't have to worry about it. I have been semi-restoring it since I got it, first just get it running safely, then replace parts with better used ones, or NOS or repos (in that order).
I may never truly "restore" it, but I will always drive it and what made me do that is a guy I met in my town. He has a 61 Duntov award car and it even has the new car smell. When talking to him, I found out the only time he's reall at ease is when it's back in the garage and the door is closed. That may be fine for him and for many others, and that's O.K.
But for me, I didn't buy a model to put on a shelf and I chose to drive it. I did just buy a 70 to experience that "new car" feel, but the 61 was one I fell in love with when I was a kid in the early 70's when a friend's older brother was under the hood of his and it was breathing fire out of the 2x4 under the plastic hood, I was hooked at 8 years old and I'm still hooked! I do notice that I am one of the youngsters at a lot of these meets, but I seek out people like you and Clem, John Hinkley, or Terry Mcmahon, to name a few, and I enjoy picking your brain to learn what I missed growing up in a different time ( I recently sat with Clem and learned all about his first Corvette and how his mother learned of it only at his wedding reception... great story, thanks Clem).
So what's the point of me writing all this? I don't know, just to let you know people like you inspire people like me to own, fix and drive these wonderful plastic fire breathing machines. So please stay right here with us!!!
                              Thanks!!!
                              Jim
P.S. I have no idea how to post a picture, but close your eyes and imagine a 61 white with white coves and a jewel blue interior with dogdish caps parked at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean inbetween a soccer mom mini van and a an SUV of some sort.
