Re: Why So Few Pics "Russ"

You bring up a subject of mine that has become a (pet pea) with me. I and a few others from the start of NCRS we're always talking about logo's first and second designs, early and late parts and so on before repro's hit the hobby. Now we also talk about the differences of original and repro. But each year our comments become less important for a couple of reasons.

1 it's easier to buy repro's then search for original parts
2 To many Corvette now have been restored with repro parts causing confusion.
3 To many Corvette are being restored and looking generic (like their all the same)
4 To many are built up to get an award and sell quick.

In the larger Pic I don't see a future for real original Corvettes, there will be a few like myself holding out or some Corvettes in a museum.
I don't see younger guys coming along (and no fault of their own ) to disciple real from un-real Corvettes. To many Corvettes are going Mod or bogus .
So it comes back to what you said , NCRS should all know about the numbers, engine, trim, codes, dates, stampings and so on. But the design and look of a original parts is another thing -like logos, first and second design , GM replacement parts design, color and so on!
That is where I'm at to day trying to show ( how the original parts (look) ) compared to repro's and design. I'm in to C1's. Adding pic in the JG along the lines I'm talking about may stay off all Corvettes becoming quest able as time goes on.
BUUUUT that only my lonely 2cents.

Re: Why So Few Pics in the C1 Judging Manuals???

        Chuck-

Thanks for your response. You offer a lot of good advice. I look forward to spending many years in NCRS, and I hope to go to the judging school some day. Learning about these cars is almost as fun as driving them.

I am restoring a 54 car, which was pretty original when I acquired it. Since there are not a lot of 53s and 54s getting judged locally, gaining knowledge on these cars is a bit of a challenge. I came across a very original car at the Berkeley Regional in 2005, and took a lot of pictures. I cannot tell you how many times I have referred to those pictures (and swapped messages with the owner of the car).

And I have just recently met the owner of a very original 54 that was made just 21 cars after mine. I have a lot of photos of that car as well. Very helpful and instructive.

After thinking about your post, maybe there is more of a need for photos in the JMs for the early cars. As the number of early cars being judged dwindles, I don't think that oral histories will be able to pass on the full knowledge needed to really understand these cars.

Thanks again for your thoughtful post and advice.

Why So Few Pics in the Judging Manuals?

Remember that the resolution (number of pixels) of the images has to be much more for quality printing on paper than it does for viewing on a monitor. Having had first hand experience with this issue, I can assure you that unless the images that are submitted for the JMs are as large as possible the end result will be worse than no image at all.

With camera's these days up to 8M picels or more this shouldn't be an issue at all...

                regards,

Re: Why So Few Pics in the Judging Manuals?

Noa doubt it will get better as time goes on, Rob, but some photos of original details were taken years ago. Nothing will change the quality of those images -- we are stuck with them. Not everyone keeps up with advances in electronic technology either. Those photos are good enough for viewing on-screen, but fail to have good enough resolution for paper. Meanwhile original car details are becoming harder and harder to find in order to photograph them using modern equipment.

Another issue I found was that it just seemed to be someone's law that there was often some glaringly non-authentic item right next to a wonderfully original detail. Show that original item, and the other thing just seems to attract everyone’s attention. That is a good technique to distract judges on the field, but makes for a poor learning experience in a JM or at a judging school.

Rob! When you give up on that thought (JM) {here} post pic's ,ask for pic's and save pic's. Many knowledgeable people here covering most of the years= Corvettes, I save many pic's people post about C2's. Then you have your own JM. I've learned more on this forum than any NCRS event.
