I think I am running excessive oil pressure(50lb @ hot idle). Tested pressure with good test gauge, same reading, relief valve on pump must be bad, replaced pump with standard pump, same pressure,I can't find a spec for normal pressure, any ideas? '62 300 hp. Thanks

Re: '62 oil pressure
Terry,
I believe the oil pressure spec on 300HP is 45 PSI at 2000 RPM. The oil pump in my 63 is Melling M55 and the car idles when hot at about 15 PSI oil pressure and looks to be close to 45 PSI at 2000. Verify that you have the standard pump and start there.- Top

Re: '62 oil pressure
Is the engine a fresh rebuild? Was pressure always this high? My 340hp runs about 20 to 25 at hot idle and 35 to 40 down the road. Maybe you replaces a high powered pump with the same. Did you switch oils or filters to cause this?

Re: '62 oil pressure
Terry,
I think Melling makes a M55 that's high volumn. It may have a letter after it in the part # and I'm sure someone will correct me with the accurate info. Check the archives on this, I believe there was some discussion a while back.- Top

Re: '62 oil pressure
Terry, When I had the parts store, we stocked Melling oil pumps. There was a M-55(standard),an M-55HV(high volume),and I believe a M-55HP(high pressure).I dont know if there was a difference on a tag or not, but I do know that we once in a while sent out the wrong one in the right box. Dale- Top
