    estate car

A local 80 year old guy just passed. I use to drink beer and talk cars with him. His widow has ask me if I am interested in his car. A 20,000 mi. 57 he bought in 58 black/silver red both top 270hp 4 spd. It has 15" wheels, I don't know if these are correct but everything else is. The car is the most original i have seen. He removed the engine one time but did no harm to the car. The paint and interior is original and looks good for a 50 year old car. I think the car is very valuable. Anyone that would like to email me with some opion would be appreciated.
    thanks RDR

      Re: estate car

It seems to me that you should advise the widow to obtain an independant appraisal so that she knows the value of the car. She then can sell it to you at that price or such other lower price which she seems appropriate regarding your relationship with her late husband.I know the temptation is to get a steal but other beneficiaries could appear and challenge. You should not appear to have taken advantage of a widow at this critical time. I am not a lawyer but you have to take pains to keep everything above board. My advice is if you want the car then buy it at a fair price. Even if the price was fair, without an appraisal, she could possibly think down the line that she was taken advantage of. (With or without the input of others) You also will be able to enjoy the car in the future with a clear conscience. Just my thoughts.

I currently have two 57's that are rstored to show condition, one NCRS and one concourse. I am the most qualified guy in the area to apprase the car but I am having trouble because the car is so original. I would like some one to give me a hint but I realize this is not a forum for setting a value on a car. I am considering a price that will not be considered taking advantage of a widow but I don't want to be a nut either. I will discuss prices privately

The key words were "widow to obtain independant appraisal" You probably are the expert here--no question-- and I know you wish to pay a fair price but you not independant and therefor counld be constued as being biased ,being a party to the transaction. Do what you gotta!! I,m out of here.

I should say that i didnt mean take advantage of the widow ,I just meant dont pass up such a car with 20000 miles that you know the history on, any price you pay will look cheap 10 years from now .

And to think that a 57 fuelie with no real history sold for 258,000 at Barrett-Jackson this year. I would much rather have this black/red 270 hp car.

                    Re: Missed this one

I was not the only one contacted and two big buyers were making offers. The car was not without sins but was very nice. I could afford it but went further than i wanted to. I have two 57's that were a lot nicer, they are just two other restored cars. I think the widow was trying to give me the last look and they just out ran me.

I think you got played by an old widow, either that or while you were kvetching about independent appraisers someone else stepped to the plate.

Any rare car deal you better get cash down and a signed agreement for price. You could pony up another pile of cash later if you payed to little and couldn't sleep. If you don't get it quick someone will ace you out.

Seems strange that the original question was asked at 11;38 and car sold by 2pm

What made this car worth 120K?
