    Re: 67 Grille Bracket Rivets

Steve - From my original owner '67 29 Nov. STL car this morning, the rivets in question on my grill bracket look like those shown in your picture (top), except mine are tarnished brown (rust-ish) in color. I wasn't ready to crawl underneath to check the bottom.

The grill has never been out, hit, damaged or monkied-with, and this summer I might pull it to re-hab and clean/paint (per another recent post.)

Also, just FYI, the area questioned by Wayne on either side of the grill near the parking light is a perfect seam. Not buggered up in any way.

I can take a pix but not until the weekend. If you would like a pix, let me know.

    Tom

Tom, the grille and surround in question are not mine. They belong to Jerry Fuccillo.

      I don't need a photo. Thanks

        Re: 67 Grille Bracket Rivets

Doesn't matter whether the car is A.O. Smith or St. Louis - the grille was installed at St. Louis, just after Body Drop and just before the front bumpers; A.O. Smith only installed the four riveted mounting brackets on the inner fenders and popped the four U-nuts in place. The grille mounting brackets were riveted to the grille in a riveting fixture on a bench adjacent to the Final Line.

I spent 38 years in assembly plants, and when a machine or tool breaks down, production people, being necessarily "creative" , will immediately find a temporary substitute to keep the line moving; holding the line for lack of a rivet would have been a "career-limiting" decision. Unfortunately, there's no way to document it.

Go Jerry, go. That's the way I restored my Feb. 14th '67 and, I'm happy to say it scorred verrry well at 7 Springs back in 1994.

P.S.: If I find the energy, I'll go check its grille brackets.

            Steve,

Thanks for the pictures. Not sure I got the rivet question resolved yet, but not sure I care. But your pictures made me take a close look at the seam and I classified that seam as a repair.

Interesting thing, if you take a look at your picture #1 and my picture, there is a similar scratch in the top of the grille about 6" right of the left bracket. Looks nearly identical. Wonder what that scratch is all about.

I don't believe thats a scratch. I believe its a casting mark and appears in a couple of places across the top of the grille.....
