    1967 A.I.R. System markings

Question for the smog experts. While reading the most recent Restorer I came across an excellent article by Ed Vignone illustrating a `66 smog small block 5 star car. Does anyone know if the `67 smog 327 car was marked the same way with a yellow grease pencil upside down on the voltage regulator 'CAL HH' as well as the yellow and green paint marks on the A.I.R. pump. I`ve spent several years hunting parts and putting one of these back together; now just trying to fine tune the details.

    Jim:
My Cal smog 67 does not have any markings on the back of the smog pump (original unit) & I don't remember any markings by the regulator.
The engine compartment was refreshed about 6 years ago so "out of sight...."

      Howard,
Thanks for your response. Perhaps this was something that only occurred during the `66 model year.

        Hi Jim –

I agree a very fine articulate article by Mr. Vignone. Do you know how to contact him? I want to document more details concerning the A.I.R. system on his car. Now I know what style of wing nut is used on the air cleaner base stud.

I’ve had three original A.I.R. pumps; still have two, with no color markings. The pressure setting plugs were color coded for the release pressure. The green code indicated 7in.hg., there is nothing listed for yellow. The pump rear cover assembly is painted with black enamel, Saginaw Steering Gear code 4291 or equivalent. The code on his pump, 01761C is a mystery with “C” as the broadcast code; “E” is representative of ’66 pumps and “P” for ‘67’s. Examples of mine are 24652E, 30052E, and 10461E.

Technical Service Bulletin #66-62 May 20, 1966 outlines the procedure to repair the “chirping” noise on early units. If repair was not possible or didn’t fix it, replace it with a pump coded 0126XX or later. This was a general repair for Chevrolet with Corvair exceptions.

          Mark,
I don`t know how to contact Mr. Vignone. I would welcome any info. Survivor cars with A.I.R. are in very short supply. The markings in paint and grease pencil are the first I`ve ever seen. I still don`t know if these marks were applied during `67 production or just possibly `66. If you find anything, let me know. Jim
