You have to remove the rotor.
The answer is a definate yes I did it on my 65 coupe years ago. I used two flat washers, use a good wheel bearing lube on the studs, nut and washer, Use the existing nurrel - you can feel this when your rotate the stud. Goes in pretty easily. The lube prevents damage to threads on new stud.
