I'm trying to identify how the ammeter is actually connected in my '64 coupe. The wiring diagram in my Assembly Instruction Manual seems to have a problem since both wires (blk/wht & blk) go to +12v on the diagram. Both of the two wires from the ammeter go through the right hand firewall connector. The B/W goes to the horn relay where a lot of red wires are connected together (+12v distribution) and the black wire goes to the battery terminal on the starter solenoid according to this diagram. There must be a mistake somewhere.

No there's no mistake in the diagrams, its just not a true "amp meter", but rather a voltage differential meter. The very small difference in the two voltages indicate whether it is charging or discharging.

The light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.
If the meter is a differential voltmeter, it must be a sensitive one measuring millivolts. The wire sizes are substantial between where the voltages are sampled. However, this would certainly explain my confusion.
