Robert was simply musing on the irony of trying to perfect the judging process to the nth degree, while the process is being applied to clear inaccuracies in the judging literature for which correction seems an intractable, endless process.
It's much easier to design a general system for the process, than to insure that ALL written literature is perfect. Ideally, all aspects of NCRS' judging system would be objective and perfect, but perfection is very hard to attain. The majority of the literature is accurate and a well-defined judging method serves us well...it makes subjectivity and favoritism less likely if does nothing more than cause judges to think through each judging task.
I thought you really wanted to hear what errors exist...every time this discussion starts, people get into trouble, and posts get deleted.
As one who has taught the course a couple of times, take the course. You'll learn the nuances of flight judging with considerable application of judging guidelines. Lots of photos are used to illustrate judging principles. And we call them the "elements of originality" which can be taught and in fact are taught. Armed with the knowledge you can judge your way out of a paperbag successfully.
The test tho, like with all training, is the application on the judging field. when assessing a difficult or challenging component, I find myself recalling those elements and discerning which one (or ones) are applicable for this partcular application. It teases out the element or originality in question if at all...or if doubt persists the prudent judge determines the doubt goes to the owner with no deduction for originality. Than with five elements, its 20% per element regardless of points available. Of course if its a couple than a judge must be reasonable and determine how to appropriately deduct for the deviation from originality.
