I recently purchased the Raytek Minitemp MT6 IR gun and I am wondering when using this to accertain the actual engine temp, where is the best place to aim the darn thing. It doesn't like my chrome plated thermostat housing. How about the upper radiator hose just above the housing? I used it after the engine was turned off and the heat soak raised the engine temp to 230 degrees based upon my gauge. should the car be RUNNING when I use the gun (with the thermostate open) for a more accurate reading?
"Shoot" the hose just above the thermostat housing outlet - the matte finish of the hose will provide a more accurate reading; do it with the engine running to get a true reading at that point. I.R. guns do NOT like highly reflective surfaces.
