    Rear air shocks, original??

I have 64 300 HP. The car is very unmolested which means the previous owners did little to the car. All of the suspension, steering components etc. appear to be factory. There is one odd thing, i notice that there are air lines to the rear shocks. My mechanic said that early Camaros had air shocks available. Could this be original? Also I ahve been thinking of replacing the suspension and steering components because they ar original. The car drives fine the way it is. Am I better off leaving it original or should I change shocks, springs, ball joints etc. Thanks for any help.

Charles, Back in the 60's those air shocks were quite popular in the aftermarket. That's probably why the car has them. John

lot of owner put them on so drag slicks would clear and you would not have to cut the fenders

              Charles----

I agree with all the others. No air adjustable shocks were ever originally used on a Corvette, either as standard equipment or as a factory-installed option. However, they could have been dealer installed. Delco did once have available air adjustable shocks for a Corvette.

Also, I'm not aware of any use, standard or factory optional, of air adjustable shocks on Camaros, at least 1st generation Camaros.

I think they were standard on El Caminos

at least my 70 had them, and my 82 has them.

A friend of mine had a 1964 or 1965 El Camino back in the early 1970's that was equipped with factory air shocks. If I remember correctly, the air fitting was located on the package shelf behind the passenger seat with steel lines running up to that point.

I think they put the air fill in different locations on different years. My 82 has it in the gas filler compartment on the driver side. If my memory serves me right, the 70 had it somewhere in the rear exterior area near the license plate.

I've owned two 66's and both of them had the old "Delco Pleasur-lift" air shocks on them. Very popular at that time.

My '64 has the air inlet feed in the well behind the passenger seat.

Interesting. And mine is a low mileage original.

                              Aftermarket or GM Dealer installed?
