My 65 (with now just 56,000 on the clock) also came to me with the same set-up and lines, although the actual air shocks had been replaced with non-air shocks. I assumed and still believe this was a typical performance mod of the period.

My Dad had them on his '62 F/I to clear larger tires. I remember him saying he used to go to a gas station in town and they'd give him the old tires off of cars that had gotten new tires...I think they were Kelly Springfields, and the balder the better. He put them on a separate set of wheels, and he said that this particular tire was really sticky when worn down. He'd then go street racing around St. Charles. Then he'd put the regular wheels back on for the week. He also saidthe air shocks helped with axle wrap.

I've got a '71 LT-1 that has OLD air shocks on it right now that I'm in the process of carefully removing. Can't tell if they're Delco or not. It's a rather hair pulling experience.

Not an original factory option, but reasonable common add-on...

I don't remember Kelly Springfields being in demand. What we used were Atlas Bucrons. Used take offs from Cadillac, big Chrysler and Lincolns that we could buy and get mounted for three or four dollars. When worn most of the way down they still had two groves around the circumference. When the groves were gone we considered it almost worn out.

verle is correct. Kelly Springfields were built here in cumberland till late 80's and they used a hard compund for their street tires. the Atlas Bucrons were our favorites also as they were soft as pony poop. mike

We'll never know....

I may have my tires mixed up....can't ask Dad, passed away in '98. All I know is, he rarely ever lost.
