Re: COLOR CHANGE QUESTION........
I would say about 7-10k.That is what half way decent paint job will cost you.I just had one looked at by a bodyman friend. The differance in the prices are because he doesn't know what he might find after he gets started. Tom- Top

Re: COLOR CHANGE QUESTION........
I haven't heard of any that high here. But this is still small town America so to speak.Like I said I have a friend that has his own small shop, maybe he is giving me a deal? But 15-20k seems a little ridiculous! Tom- Top

Re: COLOR CHANGE QUESTION........
tom ,yes 15 to 20k sounds high but, this is what i got for 15k---pre-inspection after the body was removed---paint removed to glass---3 small areas of glass work---bond seams cleaned and reworked to ones desire---doors hood conv deck fitted 3 times---choice of laq,bc/cc---body left to out-gass for 6 months prior to prime---all body lines sharpened up---this work is/was done in a 1 man shop that does vets only---30 + years of vet painting and knows every curve and dip in a vet body---i've seen and own one of his 15 year old paint jobs and they look like the day he finished---of course he lives in big town america and needs $$$---phil- Top

Re: COLOR CHANGE QUESTION........
"body left to out-gass for 6 months prior to prime"
For the life of me I don't understand why this is a requirement other than to turn a normal paint job into a 1 year turn around. Did GM out-gas these bodies before painting?- Top

"Did GM out-gas these bodies before painting?"
Nope! But, their objective was to 'make it' through a 12-month/12000 mile warranty period vs. build a Mona Lisa. AND, they ate a LOT of post production warranty claims on fit/finish....- Top

Re: COLOR CHANGE QUESTION........
In the St. Louis Paint Shop, the body was baked for 60 minutes at 280*F after first prime, baked again after sealer and first color, baked again for 30 minutes at 140*F after final color, and final-baked again for 45 minutes at 250*F. That's how the solvents were driven off - forced outgassing.- Top

The "steel car" process was similar, although the bake temperatures were higher. First prime bake was 30 minutes at 390*F, primer-surfacer was baked for 45 minutes at 285*F, first color oven was 10 minutes at 200*F to "set" it for wet-sanding, and the final reflow bake was 30 minutes at 325*F.- Top
