I'm being told that the classic Cragar SS wheels (15x8) will require a 1/2" spacer for the wheel to clear the brake calipers.
Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, does it present any problems to the car.
I'm looking to buy a set of these for driving after I mount the new F70-15 Firestone Wide-O-Vals on my stock rims (for show & judging).
I think that you will need the spacers, to clear the brake calipers. Have you already bought the fire stone tires? Those want judge well. If you want a set of re-production tires that judge well for that year you have to go with a set of Goodyear’s.
Yes, I've bought them, but haven't mounted them and have spoke with Coker about returning them, which will not be a problem.
I've found Kelsey sales Goodyears, correct era, etc. Is that who you had in mine?
I've had my car judged 3 years ago and lost 15 of the 30 originality points because I have "modern" Goodyears on it.
Do you know what the difference between the Goodyears you mention and the Firestones are, as far as judging goes?
I just did a similar setup on my 1969. I mounted a set of pre-1970 F70X15 Goodyear Speedway tires on freshly stripped and painted stock rally rims(to be covered with PO2 wheel covers). Like you, for show and judging.
I have a large BF Goodrich banner with a 1969 Corvette sporting Radial T/A’s with American Racing Torq-Thrust 5 spoke mags. A great classic look. I purchased a set of Vintage V40 rims which are Torq-Thrust Original look-a-likes. These 15X8 rims have 3¾-inch back spacing but still needed spacers to clear the calipers. I tried a 3mm spacer first and oddly enough the RF just cleared but the LF still hit the caliper. I replaced that rotor a few years back and maybe it was because of loose machining tolerances. Anyway a 5mm spacer worked OK for caliper clearance.
I mounted up a set of 235/60X15 BFG Radial T/A’s and checked for clearance. I have about 3/8-inch at the front of the fender lips at full lock. I was concerned that the additional spacer might push the outer edge of the tire into contact there. The center fender clearance seems fine and was OK with 245/60X15 Goodyear Eagles that I had on the stock rally rims.
Sorry this isn’t specific to your Cragars but I’m sure they are similar issues. I thought I would throw it out there others considering classic mag rims on their C3.
The firestone tires that they sell are not NYLON cord tires, they don’t even have the correct tread pattern on them. And the sidewall has a different wording on them. You best bet is the Goodyear tires, but you need to tell them that you want them for a 69 car. Some what different tire than the 70-72 Goodyear tires that John sells. Now I must tell you that you wont like the ride at all on the tires, oh they look real good. Just will ride like crap or a tire with 1969 technology.
I'd find wheels that fit before I'd use 1/2" spacers, which will dramatically increase the bending and shear loads on the lug studs, especially under heavy acceleration and hard braking.
