Looks to good. The letters and numbers are perfectly straight and evenly spaced,I think someone used A straight edge to line up the dies.

So what's the rest of the story? Don't leave us hanging.

Looks like an aged pad with a fresh stamp. Probably a bare block purchased across the counter several years ago which would not have been stamped.

        Just my 2 centz.

Many senior judges have to remind themselves...

in Flight Judging, we're looking at RESTORED cars (Bowtie = unrestored cars). So, parts that look too good, too new WILL HAPPEN...

When the engine stamp pad is judged, there's no condition points associated with it. It's simply a matter of apparent originality. So, despite the fact the broach marks are fresh like they were made yesterday instead of 30-50 years ago and the font lines up 'perfectly' and has a uniform depth that shouldn't be a factor in the judges' determination.

They should ask themselves this: "If I sat at the end of the assembly line and saw what I'm seeing here today, is it reasonable that it 'could' have been made by GM/Chevy within the bounds of typical factory production?" If the answer is yes, the judges should award full originality credit despite the fact the stamp pad has a high liklihood of being freshly broached, freshly stamped, and actually made yesterday...

Re: Many senior judges have to remind themselves..

I can't offer any real insight into the background behind this stamp. However the stamp does show a little more "age" in person than shows in the photo (I didn't take it).

It's on a '67 327/300 I've been looking at. A body off restoration is claimed by the seller. The previous owner bought the car through one of the big auction houses. Casting, part numbers and date codes of the major components all appeared to match when I inspected the car.

I'm certainly not an expert as are many on this site, but my initial reaction was the same as many here: although the broach marks look good, the characters appear too crisp (edges around the characters are too sharp), and the characters appear too deep and too uniform to be anything but a restamp.

            Thanks again for your input!!

Re: Many senior judges have to remind themselves..

There was a guy with a booth set up at Orlando Winter Regional several years ago that had displays of his broach work. He had the top coupla' inches cut off of a block, just making a plate for display so he wouldn't have to haul the whole block around. His broaching looked as dead right as anything I've ever seen. I didn't magnify it, but had some too strong reading glasses back in the motorhome that I went and got and looked with.

The state of the art on broaching seems to have gotten to the point that it's VERY hard to distinguish from the real thing.

Well now you tell us that, hummm restamp a 300hp doesn't make sense it costs big money to do a restamp right. But a high option car without it's original motor does affect the price, don't know. But if that was the only issue and the price is right....

Re: Opinions? - Yet Another C2 Engine Stamp Pad

I cleaned my known original pad once with naval jelly and it looked just like this one. Shiny as a new silver dollar, numers crisp and clean. Couldn't wait for it to crud up again so my friends would stop making fun of it. I wouldn't get it that clean again because everyone thinks it is a restamp.

As one other poster stated, this pad looks like it was painted with silver paint. I think this is what makes the pad and stamp look so clean and crisp. I need to see the pad without paint to pass judgement.

I don't put a lot of faith in how clean or bright the stamp pad is to determine if it is a restamp. I will show before and after photos of my stamp pad from my engine rebuild and the block was baked.

I would not have liked what they did to the pad.

                              What do you find objectionable?

                                shot blasted

Look at the first picture, below the VIN number, you see some scuffs that are not factory. When the block was shot blasted you can see in the second picture that they are now gone (unfortunately, so are your broach marks which were lighter than the scuffs). Sorry!

To protect your block at the machine shop, I cut a piece of 3/4" angle iron and drill a hole so it bolts to the block by the top water pump mount hole. I then inform the shop owner that I want to protect the broach marks and after getting a blank look and some story about how his machine ..... I write on the shop order that if the angle iron is removed, he will pay me $3000 to regrain the block. I also inform him that I will kick him in the N*^% if he does it! When I pick up the block, I remove the angle iron in front of him to check. No problems to date.
