Just got the Mr.Gasket 928G advance springs....As you can see the ends are off-center whereas the OE ends are on the center line axis of the spring.....problem?

Also, it appears the sequence in order of strength is black, silver, gold. Is that correct

From visual inspection, the black set is likely the heaviest since it has the fewest number of coils. I can't tell visually on the other two sets, but you can probably discern a difference in force by stretching them manually.

Here's a sure way to find out.

How about testing the various maps that they will produce and posting the results:

light-light
light-medium
medium-medium
medium-heavy
heavy-heavy

Set the initial timing at whatever you want with the heavy springs. I assume you have a dial back light or timing tape on the balancer. Then test and record the start point, a mid point at 1500-2000 and the maximum advance point. Back out the initial from your total reading and keep the VAC disconnected. The final data sets should look like this:

0@700 (start point)
15@1500
26@3600 (maximum)

Orientation shouldn't be a problem as long as the body of the spring doesn't interfere with anything, but there might be a "preferred" orientation with the end loop either on the bottom or top. Check them both ways.

Yep....finally found the Mr. Gasket instructions on-line...
Black=light
Silver=medium
Gold=heavy

Not sure if I will swap out the OE stop bushing with the supplied metal MrG type..

If the organic bushing is okay, do not use the brass bushing.

I doubt if the black spring is the lightest being as how it is the shortest, but your test should reveal the truth.

I just bought the LIC spring kit. I noticed from above you are mixing springs. I hadn't thought of that.

My 66 300 HP doesn't yield the full 30 deg advance only around 24 so I was going to experiment with the LIC springs. They also include weights but I will exclude those for first round of tests

Hey Randy....can you tell me more about the LIC spring kit. Does it appear to have the same spring design as pictured above? Are the springs color coded the same as the MrG stuff?

Please share your curve data per Duke's recommended format.

Also, did you rebuild/refresh your distributer prior to your most resent timing. Curious as to why both are distributors are a bit short of advertised max centrifugal advance... Another hmmmmm...

The 30 degrees is at 5000. I think most of it is in by 3-4000, then it advances very slow from there.

It won't hurt anything to free rev the engine to 5000 to see if it hits 30.

The ideal curve would be to get to about 34 total initial plus centrifugal at 2500-3000 (assuming no detontion), then one degree per thousand increase from there.

Jim, here is a pic of the Moroso kit. Spring loops are centered, not offset like the MR Gasket.

How about testing the curves that each set provides, so we can compare to what Jim comes up with for the Mr. Gasket kit?

The LIC spring kit(part #48-05) has weights, bushing and 2 spring sets. The loops on the springs are centered on the spring axis like the Moroso kit pictured. The instuctions say to install the light springs on 250 300 350 390 hydraulic lifter eng. The heavy springs on solid lifter engines.

My car is a 66 300HP and I have a 1111153 correct distributor. The shop manual says 26* @ 4100 advance. I am getting about 24 IIRC. Others have advised this spec is incorrect and AMA specs say 30* @ 5100 so I will try to get there.
