Re: result after 1 month of paint stripping

Soda blasting is a definite no-no on any Corvette. The particles are way to small and will really dig into the fiberglass.

I have done 3 C1's and it has been fabulous. I would not hesitate to do a '57, or any C1 for that matter. They are actually more sturdy and a different fiberglass than the C2's and later.

I didn't have to re-gel coat or anything. I just started with polyester primer and went straight to blocking and body work.

When I did my last '59 I took the body off the frame and plastic media blasted it. It came out amzingly well. It looked like brand new virgin fiberglass EVERYWHERE, and the edges were sharp as ever. I have attached a link to some pictures.

You can clearly see how nice it turned out and even left the bonding filler, and some bondo from and old repair.

As for doing a body on the frame, the process can be controlled very well, and any areas that you do not want blasted can be masked and covered.

When mine was done, I just vacuumed it a couple of times, and was done. I have used aircraft stripper before and it ALWAYS ends up leaving some residue somewhere that eventually shows as lifting or bubbling in some crack or crevice.

Sanding or using a DA definitely dulls the edges.

I have been EXTREMELy pleased with plastic media blasting, but I'm sure it matters who does it. Both my painters recommend it over anything for Corvettes.

Those who don't recommend it probably have never done it, or confuse it with other methods of blasting that do not work as well (soda, walnut shells, etc., which are for metal)

                    Baking Soda

I had mine done with soda and I think its the way to go. They have been doing fiberglass boats that way for years. The trick is finding someone who knows what there doing. The guy I used had been doing boats for over 10 years. 3 friends have used him also, after they saw my car done. I took him my exhaust panel had him blast it. Then took the panel to the painter to see what he thought. The painter said it looked great and said do the car that way. I don't think I would do it on a car that was still all together. I would use soda again with no worrys. Mike

I have seen cars done with soda and the results were very good. Actually easier clean up with soda than other media. You can wash soda away easier than you can plastic media.

Yes it is soda, as in Arm and Hammer. All the media, soda, plastic, walnut shells, whatever will do harm in inexperienced hands. I have had cars done with the plastic and watch them gently peel away the layers of paint, and I have seen the results (horrible) of plastic in the wrong hands. Find you someone that has done fiberglass and get references. BTW, Arm and Hammer's biggest business is the blasting materials, not your household soda
