Pulling my starter down this morning off of my 1974 small block to do some number gathering, cleaning and inspection I noticed that I only had to disconnect 2 wires from the solenoid. Upon further examination of the loom coming down, some "Bubba" had cut the wire from the solenoid to the ignition coil and taped it (left the eyelet on the solenoid). It's been this way since I bought it in 2000 with no ramifications. What is the purpose of this circuit? THANKS....Marty

That's the bypass circuit that feeds a full 12 volts to the coil (+) terminal when the starter is cranking; during normal "run" operation, the coil (+) terminal is fed by a resistance wire from the ignition switch, and only sees 7-8 volts. -

John, Do you suggest repairing or leaving it alone. I can't understand why someone would terminate this circuit? I see no problems with rewiring and properly restoring this circuit, do you? Anything else I should trace back and check? THANKS....MartyComment

i'd repair the circuit , otherwise 12 volts to points at all times will shorten the lifespan of your ignition points. the shop manual should give a wiring diagram to help you restore the electric system. mikeComment

most likely he had a after market ignition system on the car that did not need the resistor bypass wire.Comment

Hate to disagree, but I think some have it...
...backwards. His cut wire modification deletes the 12 volt wire, so all the coil gets is the 7-8 volts during start - and that is all it gets on run. So, all that has been deleted is the 12 volt start function advantage.Comment
