    54 dash crown pad

Was removing the old vinyl material from my 54 dash pad and discovered the "frame" was made of steel, with foam rubber padding. I was under the impression that they were all made of fiberglass with no pad.

Can anyone clarify to me what type was produced from the factory?

    Thanks in advance

54 VETTE ,VIN 2184, WHICH I'VE OWNED FOR 37 YEARS, HAS A FIBERGLASS FRAME. I RE-COVERED IT IN THE 80'S AND AS I RECALL, THERE WAS A THIN FILM OF COTTON THAT SERVED AS PADDING BETWEEN THE FIBERGLASS AND VINYL.OUR 55 , VIN 1416, ALSO AHS FIBERGLASS FRAME. WHAT'S YOUR VIN?MIKE

Joe ---- my '54 SN 1362 had fiberglass covered with cotten padding and the vinyl covering. The metal dash piece may be an early reproduction. I have never seen a judge test them with a magnet.

                Kent, thanx for the post.

I'm a bit intrigued by this as I've never seen someone in our hobby produce a repop using a process that is costlier than the original process. Know what I mean?

The frame for this dash pad is made from a single stamped piece of steel. Besides being fairly complex, I can only guess that the general made it. Maybe I'm beating this to death, but I'm curious.

                Keep well, Kent.

The metal ones are GM. I have seen this on late 54's. I painted a later Pennant Blue 54 last year and it had the metal crown molding. Not sure when it started but this car was around the 3300 serial number range.

Brett, thanks for the response. I'm discovering that some of the late 54's and even some 55's had them.

By chance, do you have any photos of that molding?

No. I wish had taken some though. If anyone has one, please post it.

                            Thanks
