Is their any way to tell what the original paint and interior color was on a car that has been changed to black on black? I would like to return to original. Thank you, Gary

Re: 62 Paint and Interior Color ?
Gary
Look behind the passenger seat, if they didn't sand down to the bare fiberglass you should be able to scape off the paint and in grease crayon will be the original color written out. You can also look in the trunk next to the spring. Taking off some of the interior stainless pieces might show the original paint, it depends on how good a job they did changing colors. There is no codes anywhere to prove it.
The interior is a bit harder. Look under dash for overspray, take off trim pieces. If they stripped the car completely you might not ever know the original color combination, but then neither will anybody else.

Re: 62 Paint and Interior Color ?
Places I have found the original colors:
Under the Dash Pad, under the gas Tank cover, under the Sill Plates, and in the Glove box, like under the Mouldings and lock bezel. inside the Doors may have overspray,
For the Interior, Look at the steering column and bell. The Center Console and Package Tray / support should give hints of the interior color unless they were replaced or the striping job was very good.
Good Luck...- Top

Re: 62 Paint and Interior Color ?
Probably the best place to look (I probably shouldn't give this away, but what the heck) is looking down into the body mount cavities in the trunk. usually there's some original paint down there, because it is almost impossible to strip that area.- Top

Re: 62 Paint and Interior Color ?
Gary, Here's the grease pencil marking for the exterior color on my '58. It is located on the RH side of the trunk separator panel on the trunk side. I used a quarter to scratch it to reveal this. As someone else posted or look in the archives on the location because if I remember right they changed the location by '62

62 Paint and Interior Color - Just for fun...
...I'll add that I believe that if the HT marking shows up, it is (pick one) unsally a hard top only car, always a hard top only car or has both tops. What say youse all...??? Dennis- Top

61 62 Decklids for ST vs HT?
>>...I'll add that I believe that if the HT marking shows up, it is (pick one) unsally a hard top only car, always a hard top only car or has both tops. What say youse all...??? Dennis
Dennis, you are a wise professor, always making the students think with a loaded question....So here's my research paper, teach.:-) You may want to get a coffee for this one. Good point, never thought of that. I guess there's really no way to tell which combination was original. Unless one has original paperwork showing the configuration.
Here's mine:
Both Tops. My 62 says "HT". It has all of the original extra soft top vert/horiz braces, decklid latches, etc so I'd say it's soft top was factory installed too.
So, now that I've had more coffee.....
They marked "HT" on the line in crayon before a car was painted, likely to attach the correct decklid before paint, right? I just checked the 62 AIM. Neither diagram shows ST latch holes or HT retainer holes in the decklids.
ST section(E-4.00):
Decklid assy part# 3816957(w/ ST Latch holes, no HT holes?)
HT section(419-1.00):
Decklid assy part# 3816961(no ST Latch holes, with HT holes?)
If the car was to have both tops, wouldn't there be a part# for a 3rd lid assy? One with ST Latch holes AND HT holes? Maybe I can answer my own question.....I recently acquired a very original(2top) decklid to replace my broken one, and the holes for it's HT mounts have, what looks to be very original chromed carriage bolts installed, so this lid was not on a car with a hardtop, I think.
Did all non-HT 61/62's have these 2 chromed carriage filler bolts in the decklid?
If so that explains why only 2 decklid assys. Neither page shows the part#'s for the carriage bolts, or for the threaded HT retainers, so maybe they were assembled with either set and put in the stockroom with the 2 different part numbers? This would also explain why there is no assembly instruction for them in the AIM, and no part#'s listed anwhere. Based on the ST/HT combinations, it must've been a little confusing on the line. But it goes back to why did they mark "HT" before the car was painted......They wouldn't paint the lid with the ST/HT hardware installed, and it's hard to believe the paint shop would remove it and reinstall it.
Confused, as usual....
