69 427 water pump impeller clearance

I was about to put my water pump back together tonight but then I noticed conflicting figures. The instructions that came in the kit from ZIP says that the impeller to housing clearance should be .010" to .0135". The 1969 Chassis Overhaul Manual says that it should be .10" to .035...quite a difference.

Who do you think is correct?

I would assume that the chassis manual is correct but I'd like at least a second opinion on that.

    Thanks.

Hey Greg, for once I am ahead of you on this one. I used a small hydraulic press and found it a hit or miss deal when trying to set this clearance. I slowly pressing the impeller but it would invariably jump as it went in. So....all I can say is mine is very tight...around .015 and seems to be working fine for now.

                Hi Jim,
Ya you got me on this one! I kinda thought that the hydrualic presses might have too much "spring" in them for accurate setting of the pump clearance and you confirmed it. You "nailed" your clearance but I don't want to chance it with my luck. Actually I've been looking for a reason to by one of those 3 ton arbor presses so now I have one. ...just have to find one locally.
