Re: L & R because of shock mount

    Harry-----

I think you'll find that the number is actually 3820643. That's the casting number for the 63-74 spindle support. Some 63's differ in that they have no "webbing" between the forks as do later. While the CASTING used for both sides is the same, there were different FINISHED PART NUMBERS for the left and right supports due to the machining difference described by Wayne and John. Of course, the finished part numbers often appear nowhere on the part. But, as it turns out, in this case one of the supports does have the finished part number on it. That's because the CASTING number and the FINISHED PART NUMBER for the left side support happen to be the same----3820643. The right side support is the one that doesn't have its part number on it-----GM #3820644.

          Joe,

Sorry for asking, but as I read only some 1963 forks have no webbing between them. Just as the one dated L72 on my picture. Cant this mean that this spindle support was cast in december 1962 and meant for an early 1963?

The one on the left looks like an early 63 spindle to me.

Yes, the support in question was definitely cast in 1962 (for installation on an early 63). The reason I said that the date was 1972 was because you didn't mention any difference in the configuration of the supports in your first post. I assumed that if there had been a difference in configuration between the 2 supports, you would have mentioned that. Since any support with a "7" year code (which was the case for one of your supports) would have the "webbing", I assumed that both did. So, that's why I said it was a 1972 support.

However, given the fact that the support with the "2" year dating has no webbing, it's definitely an early 63 support cast in 1962. No doubt, at all, about that.
