Re: C1 Brakes - See Photos!!

Yes I understand that the star-wheel in the second photo is installed backwards, But if it was flipped around, the star-wheel would NOT be visable though the hole on the backing plate. (Would not be able to adjust by hand.)
Wrong backing plates? Let me guess. The axles would have to be removed to remove the plates...

          Ken,

My '57 has the rear backing plates and cylinders oriented as in your pics. It's because the flanges on the axle housing are "clocked" to rotate the backing plates forward. Have had my car for 43 years and never have figured out the reason for it, but see no reason to suspect this isn't factory original. Maybe it was a Zora speed secret.

              Ken,
I think I just figured out why the star won't line up if you reverse it on your left side. The 59 parts book shows 2 different part #'s for L & R brake flanges(a.k.a. backplates). Left is 3708841, Right is 3708842. Since your right lines up ok, I think you have 2 right backplates. I have a full set of flanges in a box buried somewhere here in the garage. I'll dig them out in the morning to see if this makes sense.

Other thing is I don't believe C1 Corvettes ever had self adjusters. If not, someone did some interesting mods.

Plus it just came to me. I just checked Noland's C1 book. On page 189 is the photo of the heavy duty brakes. Yes the backplates are vented with screens unlike yours, but the flange plate is tilted towards the front just like on yours.

              ????
