    C1 Brakes

    1959:
Could anyone please post or email me a few good photos of the brake shoe assembly area? (With the drum removed.) Left and right. I'm trying to figure out if I have the springs and adjusters installed correctly. When I got the car, a few of the adjuster wheels where not positioned in front of the adjusting hole on the rear backing plate. I want to make sure on got everything correct now.
The rear and/or front would be a great help.
    Thanks Ken

      Hi Ken,

Yes, sounds like the adjuster just need to be positioned so that the serrated wheels line up adjacent to the access holes. Springs are hard to explain.

Sorry, no photos, but if you have the 58/59 service manuals there are pictures of the assemblies there. If you'd like, email me directly and I'll email you a few photos from my manuals.

              Ken -

If you don't have one, you should get the 1961 Passenger Car Shop Manual; it has all the gory detail on common components that were shared with the pass. cars which was omitted from the ST-12. Available from the on-line store.

From my 61 manual, and my 29-59 parts book. You can zoom them for better clarity.

Re: C1 Brakes - See Photos!!

Rich has been a big help so far. Below are two photos of my '59 rear brakes. (left and right)
My first question is about the location of the wheel cylinders. Should the wheel cylinders be located at the top? (12:00 O'clock) Why are my assy rotated? What should I check? (Back mounting plates...)
Second question: It looks like someone installed "Self Adjusting" levels that turn the star-wheels at the bottom. On the left side the adjusting lever is NOT over the star wheel. BUT the star wheel is in front of the adjusting hole in the back side. If the star wheel was turned around so the adjusting lever would hit the star wheel, then it could not be adjust from the rear hole. what's up?

Second pic. The star wheel is back wards, should be under the Self Adjusting lever , also the spring is back wards, and yes the wheel cylinders are located at the top . You have the wrong backing plates from some car.( dont you just love those Bubbas)

Yes I understand that the star-wheel in the second photo is installed backwards, But if it was flipped around, the star-wheel would NOT be visable though the hole on the backing plate. (Would not be able to adjust by hand.)
Wrong backing plates? Let me guess. The axles would have to be removed to remove the plates...
