    Metallic brake shoes

I pulled these tired old metallic brake shoes off of a tired old C1 big brake race car.

Both are Delco Morraine # 5460376

Can anyone identify the brake #'s and their application.

Also..can these be re-padded..and if so by whom.

    Re: Metallic brake shoes

I don't think the vintage metallic and cerametallic compounds are available anymore, but there are better alternatives.

    Check out Carbotech Engineering:

It's been awhile since I talked to the proprieter, but he is an old hand experienced with C2 J-65 metallic brakes.

The carbon metallic material that he uses to reline shoes has similar stopping power to the old metallic material with much less temperature sensitivity.

IIRC he has relined many C1 and C2 shoes with the material and can probably provide you with references. I think "K2" over on the CF had his shoes relined by Carbotech.

I don't know if the CM material is segmented like the original metallic material, but once the drum is installed, no one will know.

            Joe,

I have made inquiries about new pads for metallic brakes. The material is available but is not currently manufactured in curved stock, only flat. It is used for facing on large truck clutch disks.

It may be possible to fit some flat stock to the shoe then fit the pads to a drum but have not pursued the idea.

I suspect it would be a challenge to work the pad to fit.

I would be interested in a source for new pads.

Does anyone know how thick the new pads were?

                    Here's J65 front (thicknesses)

Verle -- these are probably thinner than the Z06 types. Pic shows new-in-box old stock 3794191, 11 x 2_3/4 inch fronts.

Pad thickness from the shoe with more segments (can never remember if this is the primary or secondary) : 0.297" on the middle pads, tapering to 0.257" on the ones toward the ends of the shoe.

The other shoe with fewer segments: (same pad thickness on all) 0.175"

Also have the rear shoes NOS # 3794194, if measurements required.

The segment dimensions for both J-65 and HD brakes are in the '63 AMA specs - not sure if other year AMA specs have this data.

                            Joe,
I'm not sure if you are referring to fronts or rears or a #684 or #687 car. According to the parts book metallic brake cars and HD brake cars used different shoes in some years. I have seen 1 3/4" wide rear shoes with stamped part number 5456593 and 2 1/2" wide shoes with stamped part number 556976. That is a Delco number which most likely is different from a Chevrolet number. Interesting thing is both the primary shoe and secondary shoe have the same number so apparently they were stamped prior to installation of the pads. There are two vendors in the Hemmings/Services section that advertise eBrake Shoe relining.
