How do you do this when you're assembling an engine on a stand? The oil pump, shaft, and distributor have been removed. The engine is upside down on the stand. How do I put the shaft, sleeve, and pump in? Won't they fall out from the topside?

You assemble the pump, retainer, and intermediate shaft. Then, you install the whole assembly onto the engine. Even if the engine is upside down, the shaft and sleeve will not fall out. There are groove in both the oil pump shaft and the intermediate shaft. "Tangs" on the ID of either end of the retainer snap into each.
the hole in the rear main cap where the shaft goes thru is smaller that the OD of the retainer so the shaft will not go thru when the block is upside down..
