I have early 63 starter with date of K?2 (can't remember day) and it has a 9910 solenoid and I believe never touched before me. The letter K would indicate month of October and my car is built second week November 62. I will try to find a picture if I took one and post.
Tim,That's a good find you made. Thanks for the good info.
I hope that Jorjorian saw this also. He has been preaching to me for a long time now that my 63 should have a 9910. Happy New Year, John D.

Hi All
My Sept'62 built SWC has a 1107242 starter with a 2J17 date. However the solenoid is zinc cad. Should the solenoid be black? Easy fix I guess, but that's the way I got it back from John Pirkle.
Frank, Jorjorian and Hanson say that the solenoids on the 63 should be black. NOS ones in the box are zinc. SR's are zinc. Coming down the ST.Louis line they were black. Michael Hanson posted some nice pics recently on VH's showing black solenoids on chassis'on the line.
But as far as NCRS goes my 63 solenoid got dinged cause it wasn't zinc. I have no clue what the manual says. The solenoid color thing seems to be a problem child part. Maybe the new JM coming our this year will clarify that. John D.
