    Re: C2--Find the VIN

    Hi Guys,

Great news! We took the wheel off today and (after working our fingers until they were sore from scrubbing) we were able to find the VIN--and it matches the title I have! Yeah! I'm not sure why the VIN tag was ever removed from the car, but now we'll be able to get a new VIN tag issued. I really, really appreciate all your help. That number was tough to find and without your very detailed descriptions and supply suggestions, we'd never have found it. Thank you all so very much! I'm sure I'll have many more questions as we continue on this adventure, so I'm sure I'll be posting soon.

I hate to think it, but your VIN tag may be on some else's Corvette. You might try Googling the number to see if its for sale someplace

        Steve and Gretchen------

I agree; it's the only explanation I can think of for why the VIN tag would have been removed. In some states, I believe it's possible to get a car registered with only a "bill of sale" and without previous paperwork, title, etc. So, a stolen car can be fitted with a "clean" VIN and registered. Since there is no "national registration system" to ferret out duplicate VINs, it's possible for 2 cars with the same VIN to be registered in different states.

However, this shouldn't amount to a problem for Gretchen. She has a car with a proper title and matching the frame VIN. The state can verify that and issue a replacement VIN tag.

            Hi Wayne,

I really appreciate the photo you posted for us. I found the VIN exactly where you showed in the picture. We never would have found it otherwise. It took a little scrubbing and my compact make-up mirror, but we got it. Thank you so much for sending this. Your picture was worth more than a thousand words to us because at this rookie stage the words are Greek to us!

              Hi Steve,

I googled with no luck. I'm just happy that mine is legitimate. I do appreciate all your wisdom--thank you!

Did you see if your car was registered here?

                  Hi Chris,

Thank you for suggesting this website! I checked, but my car isn't there. I'll be sure to register it, though.

                      Hi Tony,

It's funny you mentioned this suggestion, because that's exactly how we've found a number of parts for this car. We found several manuals in boxes with manuals for other cars he had; we found the decals in a box with bolts, and random metal pieces. Unfortunately, my husband and I took this car home with us--8 hrs from Grandpa's garage--so I probably won't be able to do anymore hunting for a while. This process has already felt like a treasure hunt, but so far it's going well! I'll post something if I ever run across this tag. Thanks for your help!
